Character Build: The Crystallurgist

  • March 11, 2015

Getting all 24 stones is one of those things that only happens if you are specifically going for it, I think!  The only annoying part is gonna be getting 25k for Proudspire Manor (there's a Stone of Barenziah in there).  But hey, that's what alchemy is for, right?

Level 3 so far!  Saved just before finding the Eye of Magnus inside Saarthal last night.  Bound Sword is amazing for power leveling.  I don't know why anyone would suggest soul trapping a horse...

Being a 'white wizard', I'm going for atromancy over undead, since frost atronachs look like giant crystals and storm atronachs are Big Friendly Golems of sorts.  I've already got most or all the ingredients for both tomes at the A. Forge!  Everything looks great for the playthrough so far.

Do you think i should be putting a lot of time into the college of winterhold quests early on or should i prioritise other quests lines or just explore?

The College is useful for leveling yourself up and such, but other than the first piece of the Gauldur amulet (which is obtained very early in the College questline) there's no rush. I'd definitely make the Dawnguard quests a priority, as there are several more important items there -- the Ring of the Erudite and Soul Cairn summons should both be obtained by around level 15 or so, and the Aetherial Crown by level 25 -- earlier if you can manage it.

Also, since you'll be playing Dawnguard for the first time, that's all the more reason to focus on those quests first. But yeah, the College quests are relevant and helpful in their own way.

Thanks a lot. After i joinedtye college i did the sarthall quest and then went straight to get the fiery souls enchantment. So now i might do the gauldur legend quest for the amulet. I might go to the greybeards so i can travel to solstheim as well.

Good call going after Fiery Soul Trap early -- it's a very useful and economical enchantment.

You can actually travel to Solstheim at any time, FYI. And in fact, it's cheaper to go before you get attacked by cultists. You can just go to Windhelm, talk to Captain Gjalund on that ship, and he'll offer to take you for 250 coins. If you wait to go to Solstheim until you've been attacked by the cultists, the fare is 500 coins!

You can go to Solstheim before starting Dragonborn! Talking to the Greybeards is required to get the quests rolling, though.

I was just barely able to conjure storm atronachs at level 3!  There's 125 free magicka I didn't even have to take advantage of (Altmer race, Blessing of Julianos, Atronach Stone).  What a relief, especially on the standing stone!

Level 9 now, only one more to go until I can get that tasty Masque.  Then it's buckle down time while I go for the remaining 9 stones and collect my 25k!

Nice, glad to hear it's going well, especially with the changes you're making. You're making me want to re-play this one, now!

Still at level 9, only 4 stones to go!  Reeking Cave by the Thalmor Embassy, Pinewatch, and DB Sanctuary (which also conveniently gets me Cicero's Clothes with tasty Fortify Barter).  If I don't hit Lv10 by the time I'm at 23 stones, I'll just smith with what gems I already have so I can get that sexy Masque and start selling loot to buy Proudspire.  Alas, I thought for sure Windstad would be my first home.  I'm definitely going in an odd direction for this build, though!  The only role-playing oddity so far was joining the thieves' guild way early.  I can and have justified joining it after becoming Archmage... I guess I'm just a rebellious scamp of a good wizard who cares more about crystals than obeying the law!

If you wanna try your own build again, go for it! I'm having lots of fun with it, although I feel like I have Quest ADHD because of rushing for the stones.  Playing on PC I might just give myself Prowler's Profit at the start, in the name of jewelry smithing!  Alternatively I'll probably just buy+transmute for gold rings next time I do this.  Either way, that would let me avoid fast travel and just roam around questing as I see fit.  Librari is usually the Walkabout Wizard!

If you wanna take a look at how I've planned out my perks, I saved it for self-reference.  Summoner is the best, it's kept me safe so much with my 100 health.  Not sure how the light armor perks are gonna play out, but I guess I can always reset them later if I find out I don't need them to hit armor cap.

Somehow in all the chaos of spazzing specific dungeons collecting these stones, Librari managed to complete The Book of Love.  Since I dragged Brelyna all over Skyrim with me, I thought proposing to her right after watching the ghosties float into the afterlife was a nice way to end the quest.  I didn't intend for that to actually happen!  It just sort of... happened.  Just imagine the two of them holding hands while turning in the quest at the temple.

Wedding is on hold until I've actually done any side quests to have any guests, though!

Does sound interesting! Your character seems to have a lot of life to him. That's the most important part to an enjoyable playthrough, more than planning or synergy or anything else. I don't think I got married or even used followers in my runs of this build. Feel like I missed an opportunity there.

Regarding your perk plan, I feel you could do without Arcane Blacksmith, since all the gear is custom-made -- unless you do end up buying some generic magic armor from smiths, of course -- you can just temper before you enchant, where applicable.

I think you'll probably find Matching Set to be unnecessary. I got by without it, and I wasn't even using Smithing! Though, to be fair, you're not using Alteration, so maybe it evens out ... But I suspect with an end-game tier custom Smithing potion, generic Elixir of the Blacksmith, and your Smithing level/perks, you can get even more constant/passive AR from tempering than the 100 temporary AR from Ebonyflesh. You'd probably get a bit more benefit from Unhindered there, if anything. Faster movement, longer sprinting, etc.

Otherwise, it looks about how I'd do it if I swapped Alteration for Smithing and Necromancy for Atromancy. Looking forward to hearing more of your adventures, bud!
