Fallout 76: Multiplayer Brainstorming

Agreed DB - I get that.
In the No-Clip bethesda doc, didn't they say they have another doc coming out on just the making of FO76?

Oh, then there could be a doc and an interview. I knew about the doc and that it was 'starring' Todd Howard.

How I love the internet, the cries of "Fallout is dead" and the like are being shouted far and wide despite none of these people having gotten there hands on the game. And while this is happening the few that are suggesting we give the game a chance are being insulted in true internet style. It just wouldn't feel right otherwise.

There's already one confirmed interview with Todd happening at some point soon, so hopefully we get some clarification on what he meant by "you can play solo" and a lots of other things.

I'm not that radical, but I get them. Fallout 4 was an unexpected big disappointment for many Fallout fans, myself included. I think I speak for some percentage of the fanbase that we were hoping that Fallout 76 would give us our "Fallout" fix for this generation, and it being multiplayer lowers the chance of that happening. I doubt we can have something akin to New Vegas in a multiplayer game, or even something like Fallout 3.

So a considerable amount of Fallout fans, in the end, will have to wait what, almost 15 years for another Fallout, maybe more (since New Vegas)? I understand their frustration.

Just a quick throw back to what was said before about a lot of YouTube and the internet in general crying foul about FO76.....it’s all really sad because everyone seems to be forgetting that this is not Fallout 5 lol. This is a completely bonus entry in the series and an experimental offshoot. Coming out just three years after FO4..... TES will be going close to 8 or 9 years between Skyrim and TES 6 which might not even drop till 2020. I’m happy and excited to have some crazy mini mmo to play until then. Speaking of which I’m thinking power armor tank for me.... :-D

I'd be fine with that if Fallout 4 was a good RPG and a good Fallout. But when stacked against New Vegas' levels of storytelling, RPG elements, dialogue, characters, and when compared with other Bethesda games where the players' freedom, from gameplay to roleplaying is a core feature, Fallout 4 falls flat. That's why I understand part of the communities' frustration as being completely justifiable.

At the risk of taking this off-topic, Edd I think you're going to be disappointed if you are expecting that Fallout 5 - whenever and if it even happens - is going to be a throwback to Fallout New Vegas - which, remember, wasn't even a Bethesda title.

I think the Bethesda wagon is now firmly hitched to action-adventure / First person shooter with RPG elements. Base building is obviously now firmly embedded and will, presumably, get ramped up as we go along. And, of course - as has been alluded - the 'experiment' with multi-player will soon become part of Fallout's 'norm' IF it actually works.

At the end of the day, Fallout 4 outsold Skyrim. Skyrim outsold Fallout New Vegas. And money talks where Bethesda (or any other gaming company, for that matter) is concerned - as the Creation Club eloquently demonstrates!

I used New Vegas as an example of what a nearly perfect Fallout game would be to me, but I'm aware it's unique in the gaming world. My problem isn't with base-building, which was actually fun, or any improvements to first person combat, which were needed. My problem is more with how Bethesda handled their own "gaming heritage" - even when compared with Fallout 3, you can see how limiting Fallout 4 was, especially when it comes to roleplaying, player choice and dialogue options (or "three different ways of saying yes and one of saying no"). Even Todd Howard acknowledges some of those problems: https://www.pcgamer.com/fallout-4-lead-todd-howard-dialogue-system-didnt-work-as-well/

Games like New Vegas, Morrowind, Final Fantasy 7, Ocarina of Time, and far far more often hold sprecial places in our hearts and the nostalgia often supersedes issues and limits that today we take for granted. If they had announced no new games and only remakes of those classic titles with today’s graphics there would be just as many complaints about that if not more because it’s nothing “new” just reliving past titles that like Paul said didn’t make all that much money. Nothing like what the action adventure RPGs rake in. I would like to think that Bethesda while far from perfect has a pretty good idea that FO76 will offer us something we will like. Won’t be for everyone but again like Paul said FO4 outsold it all and still gets a lot of love and hate. I expect FO76 to be just as decisive but I for one will at least want to love it as much as I can and hopefully as much as I do FO4, Skyrim and all the other FO and TES games.

*Cough* (06/11) Todd Howard Q&A with Geoff Keighley Highlights You can not play Fallout 76 offline Even when playing 'solo' you will see other players There is a questline There are no NPCs, excluding robots. Quests can still be given by terminals, holotapes etc. PvP is still being tweaked. They don't want it to be "griefy" but want it to have drama You can "decide" to do PvP; being aggressive or ignoring it VATS exists but real-time, not slow-mo Fallout 76 will "evolve over time", taking feedback into account and interaction with fans "We love mods", "100% committed". Modding will be present but not at launch. "Private world" will be possible down the line"
