Discussion: Why do you Roleplay

    Why do I roleplay?

Because I want to be a mighty warrior fighting for glory.

Because I want to be a sneaky thief with a full pouch.

Because I want to be an assassin and change history by taking a life.

Like Todd Howard said in 2011. when he showed the gameplay of Skyrim.

"Be who you want to be."

    That's why I roleplay.

Never heard this quote before, but it hits the nail on the head.

He said it slightly in a different way at the beggining of the 20 minute gameplay video when he talks about leveling and skills.

While I get the point, I do have to say I can't be an all powerful Necromancer in Skyrim without mods. So that line is a lie, especially by Todd.

    That is a great topic!

So for me the reason to roleplay is because I like anything that has to do with the fantasy genre and the like. I first came across the fantasy genre through games. The first game that pulled me into it and roleplaying should have been one of the rpg games from the D&D series but I might be wrong it's been quite a few years since then and I don't remember, 14 to be exact. At that time it was my first time playing such a game and I was an elf with a sword and maybe magic(?) I don't remember but just the thing that while playing I felt like I was someone else doing whatever he pleases with a sword in hand was amazing. After that I went on to play my first mmorpg games and also explore the greatness of the fantasy genre through other sources like reading, music or a few movies and not only through games.  Also I think roleplaying is a great way to relieve some stress and take your mind off from the "down to earth" everyday life.

So since then as you can imagine I 'm the kind of nerd that would like to wake up one day in such a world with swords, magic, inns - taverns, adventurers and all that nerdy cool stuff :D . wat? Problem? :p

Is it weird when I say that I only started roleplaying because I was told that was the future of building? Yeah, yeah, I'm really into it now but when I first started building I was one of those guys kind of obsessed with aiming for a Legendary Build and I saw that mechanics and simple gameplay weren't working and reached out for some advice and was told that the answer was RP. From there on in, each build got a little bit more complex, starting out with just a longer backstory, then moving on to in-character portions of text, then a few builds that were entirely hinged on RP and ah yeah.

Now I'm more into it because it allows me to create characters, and it's a way for me to just enjoy myself. Admittedly I'm still a bit of a power-player but hey, can't be perfect :P

    Thank you.

Ahh, D&D I think that is almost everyone;s first experience with Roleplaying because that is also how I got started. The first time I played D&D I was a Necromancer who wanted to bring back his family after they were all slaughtered, but later on, he became corrupted and just wanted everyone to die for he lost his humanity and saw no reason to save it. I totally agree with you on that Roleplay is a great way to help you escape real life and such because going back to my D&D Necromancer it helped me cope with the death of great grandmother and it made much easier to handle.

Roleplaying is the future of building? Where did you hear this from because it seems like Roleplaying is that last minute/not important part of a build? Anyways, I am glad to hear that you become more focused on Roleplaying since it should equally important since everyone can make a powerful, but only some can make one interesting. Plus, writing a backstory and what have you is a great way for you to get a better idea of how to make things flow together.

"Perfection is simply the act of being one's, harshest critic," My high school art teacher told me that and ever since then it has stuck, and I thought it sums my feelings. :)

Ah well it depends on who's builds you look at. Some people do tend to focus more on gameplay but you can find a fair number of more experienced builders who tend to really focus on how to make their character as complete or complicated as possible. It isn't everyone, but it's a lot more common nowadays than if you go back far enough.
