Character Build: The Sapiarch

  • March 31, 2015

Welp.  Just killed Mirmulnir. (Took a few tries, most were successful battles but the cutscene afterward was not firing and I wanted it to!) Still haven't touched a melee weapon, and using normal bows because I don't want this character to go to Fort Amol without an in-character reason to.  I'll probably end up buying Bound Bow later on; money's not hard to get in Skyrim anyways!

I still haven't even gotten close to the heart of this build yet.  But I might grab Bound Bow and Atronach Stone on the way to Ivarstead!

I uh, I got the Atronach Stone at least, but then... I got interrupted by a rather rude dinner guest.

Also ran into like five hundred other things that wanted to kill me, and spent a lot of the time running away panicking while healing myself with both hands! xD Totally felt like a boss when I was coming back from looting the word wall that dragon had flown over from, and saw Farkas and Ria getting obliterated by a saber cat.  I just stood by my dragon bones with a big smirk heh.  Who's the milk drinker now, huh?  Huuuuuuh?

Also ran into some jerk of an apprentice storm mage on the way back, which gave me a chance to test bound swords, infinite stamina (via veggie soup), and 100% magicka absorb.  That guy REALLY didn't like fighting a Sapiarch-type build.

Hah, just wait till you get the real thing. Veg Soup is just a small taste! I'm honestly having trouble not using infinite Stamina now that I've started a new character. -_-

Pretty ballsy of you to be facing that dragon head-on. Don't you play on Master? My guy was too weak to challenge a dragon up close in the early levels; I had to pick them off from cover using my bow. Or maybe I'm just ultracautious.

I've been checking out Infinite Stamina and I'm pretty sure it can't be used with the Dawnguard Shield (unless my testing was flawed), but I think it's because it requires 10 stamina and when you have a fraction of a fraction, it doesn't count as enough?

I think its best use really is Archery and I'm tempted to steal it for my Event build.

Which effect specifically are you talking about -- the +10 bash damage to vampires, the stendarr's aura cloak effect, or general bashing/power bashing?

I haven't played with the shield in ages, but IIRC, the aura is not triggered by bashing, but rather by sustaining the block action (i.e., by holding the block button for a few seconds). That doesn't require any Stamina in the first place, so it should be doable with or without infinite Stamina. I can't imagine why the bash-related effects wouldn't work, but I haven't tested them at all. I can look into it later.

Sorry, I meant the Dawnguard Rune Shield.

Oh, no, the bash works fine (I didn't explicitly test it, but there's nothing to cause issue), but the Stendarr's Aura drains stamina at a rate of 10/s (maybe not 10, but a fair bit). I was thinking this could be perfect for a crusader-ish character, but the math fails somewhere. I'm thinking you can cast concentration spells with no magicka (that sort of start-stop-stall thing every mage does for the first few levels with Flames), but the shield requires X amount to activate.

This is completely irreverent to the build, but I thought I saw someone ask if this can be done.

I just tried it out in-game and it worked just fine. I could sustain the aura indefinitely, even after my Stamina drained. Bashing sometimes broke the effect for a moment, but not always. I recorded a video which I can upload if you'd like.

Also, speaking of the rune shield ... I was thinking about using this for a build, but I'm leaning toward not doing that, so for anyone interested: I'm pretty sure the shield's aura effect can be used in conjunction with a normal spell cloak such as Stendarr's Aura. Throw in Necromage, a Restoration potion, and maybe a Shalidor's Insight: Restoration scroll, and you should be able to get over 100 DPS from the two cloak effects combined.

Even without the scroll, you're looking at probably 70-75 DPS. Could be a good centerpiece for a Crusader or Paladin build if anyone wants to give it a shot.

God, I hate discussions that break off.

I'll take your word for it and try it again. I've been thinking of a Khajiiti paladin for a long time and board+claw might be just perfect. The Rune Shield can definitely be used with a cloak, this was why I was so interested in it. Thanks for taking the time to test it, too.

Teccam - Rune shield aura + cloak is a mechanic I use with my Sun Priest. Sun damage and fire damage combined is awesome.

But I had cover! The cover happens to be named 'Steadfast Ward' and I would definitely not have survived without unlimited concentration casting! It took several minutes to bring that thing down. I went back today and got Bound Bow, but I can't cast it yet. XD Levels are just flying by and she is really growing in confidence and power. Just in time, too. I just reached bandit thug levels and haven't quite reached the first Mage Armor perk!
