I have seen alot about How to Roleplay Thiefs and Assassins, but i can barely find anything about Mages.

So i created this Discussion for everyone to Chime in and post theyre ideas and Fun little quirky things they do.

I'll Start of with a few of my own to get the Ball Rolling.

    - Learning a spell takes time. since when do we read the First Page and are just instantly an Expert on the Topic of the Book? When i Learn a spell i'll usually sit down in a save location and wait 3 hours for Novice spells 4 for Apprentice and so on. Or even better if you happen to have a skill book for the corresponding Magic School,Read that and then learn the spell.

    - be Creative. why fling 5 fireballs if you can place a rune then use mage light to lure people to the rune.

    - Dont go out carrying 5 armor sets and 7 swords. Travel light youre a Mage not a bulky Fighter.

-The Nords dont trust Magic. why run around with a big Target on youre Back because you are wearing youre College Uniform. Get normal Clothes for Towns.

I tried the mod which lets you learn a new spell over the course of repeated reads but, man, too much of a pain in the scrotum. To compensate, I can't help but use the "read book" animation whenever my character reads a book. It has become something of a ritual to learn a spell right near my favourite bookshelf. Is it sad that I have a favourite bookshelf?

Huh, you know I don't really Roleplay Mages in Skyrim, it was a lot easier in Oblivion or Morrowind where I would do things like, only buy spells from professionals who could 'teach' me the spell which feels a lot more natural than Skyrim's weird system. Actually yeah, I just don't RP mages in Skyrim at all. Huh, I'll have to think of some ideas to fit that into my characters from now on.

I'm not a spell-flinger as a rule either. Normally cross-class, it's been years since I played a pure mage so am finding it hard to remember anything else I may have done. Nothing as clever as Vez's "- be Creative. why fling 5 fireballs if you can place a rune then use mage light to lure people to the rune" that's for sure. I think I just chucked stuff 'til magicka was empty and then downed potions. Good times!

Nice discussion, Vezra! Mages are a little harder to roleplay because of the whole magic thing, but because of this I think they can be one of the most fun and versatile classes in the game.

Building on the topic of creativity, imma link Alastor's fantastic Vancian Wizard build. It basically focuses on creating spells through combining existing ones, which is one of the best ways to make mages more interesting and personal. You can tailor spells to a backstory, specific class, morality, goal, relationships etc.

But eventhough combat is a big part of any character, what you do outside of it is even more important. Like Phil said, learning spells a certain way, in a certain place, is also important. We are creatures of habit after all. Developing little ticks and personality traits is great for character development, especially for a mage, a class known for its eccentricity and qurkiness. Getting ingredients from Arcadia and no one else because she's got the best Nirnroot around (Phil I swear to god if you make a euphemism about this :P) is right up their alley, and makes them so fun to roleplay.

I do the same stuff for my Necromancer ^^ stuff like Paralyse + poison rune or Mark for death and Freeze from the Ahzidal ring, now youre enemy is a slow walking wet paper tissue for youre follower to hunt :D or i'll use Disarm + telekinese to steal weapons ^^ Ash shell is actually really usefull if you use it creatively, like on youre follower in a big fight. you just made an invincible Pinnata :D

The thing that bugs me is the way Illusion is set up. Illusion should be Phantasmal walls or Phantom summons and decoys. the should do something like a charm school or Manipulation school instead. But maybe thats just D&D talking out of me ^^

And for example my curennt build is a Pure Necromancer. no damage dealing exept poison rune poisoned dagger or with the Main weapon a Destruction staff. this build is a supporter and later on a bit of a disabler. healing youre Undead, poisoning the enemy and debuffin them while youre thralls destroy them ^^.
