Discussion: Your Own Deities

Hey everyone, ZonnoSpark here again to bring you a discussion a bit different to usual.

With the Aedra and Daedra and a whole host of other religious pantheons in the Elder Scrolls universe, thinking up interesting ways for our characters to worship them is a big part of creating a character.

But has anyone created their own deity for their character to worship?

If not, why not? And if yes, how are they worshipped, what do they represent, what do different races think about this god (did you integrate them into an existing pantheon, or are they a lone wolf) etc etc?

I actually have created my own once before and I named him Balar and he was in the Breton Pantheon. Balar was said to be the second greatest Necromancer, behind Mannimarco. He is worshiped by making human sacfirces or capturing their souls and offereing them at Balar's Phylactery and in return he will teach them how to become better Necromancers.

Well, i did in my oldest build, but that's off in the netherrealm of deleted builds now.

    It was a chicken god.

On occasion, I play with the idea of making Daedric Princes or Demi-Princes. Never Aedra/Divines though.

So was he a mortal who ascended to Godhood like Mannimarco, or was he already a deity who was surpassed in skill by him? I can see both options being great story openers - either a man battling it out with the King of Worms for the top spot, or a god desperate to hold onto the title that's rightfully theirs.

Just because it's not around anymore doesn't mean it's not interesting! Who woshipped this God? I'd assume farmers or everyday citizens praying for a the health of their livestock, but there could be some interesting metaphors associated with chickens (the world is an egg and Alduin is the chick that hatched from it for example).

I definitely think it's easier to make a Daedra, they feel a bit more accessible as they actually interact with mortals, and theres the whole Sheogorath thing that makes the idea of a partial Prince more likely. The Aedra feel a bit more... fixed, like theirs already an order that can't be messed with.

Got any examples of a Demi-Daedra, they sound pretty badass.

I actually had an idea for a Divine observer type of deity. Someone who watches things unfold in the mortal world and intervenes if necessary to make sure things go his way. Something like a cosmic chessmaster.

I'm not sure why, but this kinda reminds me of Demeter from the Greek Gods - someone who is often forgotten but does more for mortals than all the other and more well known gods combined.

Also, do you think they're a bit similar to Herma Mora? Always has a plan for everything, always has a few tricks up their sleeve, plays their cards close to their chest... other metaphors which basically mean they're always prepared. Obviously a bit less morally corrupt than Hermy, like an opposite.

Who do you think would worship this deity? When you say 'chessmaster' it makes me think of a wise general or Jarl, but I could also see quiet scholars, optimistic adventurers and even City Guards paying homage, either to make sure things go their way or because they want foresight into the future.

Sorry for the late reply. Stupid Internet.

Yeah, it kinda is like Demeter (had to go Google that up).

They're not exactly a deity for worship. They're more like servants of the Gods who have been tasked to observe the world in their stead or are guardians of the realm. Note that this is just a concept I'm playing around here, and there still things I need to get around with.

So yeah they're less morally corrupt than Hermy because what they do is for the good of the realm. They interfere with the mortal realm in a very subtle way that humans won't even notice it until they were told. As Dr. Monty from BO3: Zombies would put it, they "plant a few seeds, and see what sticks and what grows."

Basically, he was a mortal who became a regional God or even Demi-God, you could say. He never really acsend to godhood, but some Breton Necromancers say he is the second half of the Necromancers Room, and represnts Knowledge, Diease, and Serectry.

@Zonnonn Demiprinces are pretty rare in ES lore. Basically, they're what happens when a mortal has offspring with a Daedric Prince. There's little official info on them, but here's a UESP link for you.
