History
Tali’s family was killed during one of the Aldmeri Dominion’s purges in Valenwood. He survived but spent a majority of his young adult life as a slave and was forced in to manual labour in his home (among other things) until escaping at age 45. He came to Skyrim two decades after his escape.
Growing up in Valenwood, Tali did engage in the Green Pact’s Meat Mandate but he has not since leaving his homeland. However, since his biology is based entirely off eating meat, he cannot have vegetables even now or he becomes ill, effectively he is a carnivore through and through. Luckily his skill with the bow has made him a proficent hunter and thus survival has never been an issue.
As to why he became an assassin, he will never tell. Even his closest friends don’t know why. His feelings towards being Dragonborn in the beginning were neutral. He didn’t see it as a bad or good thing and he didn’t feel any sense of duty or responsibility for it. Though as time went on, and assassins from a cult claiming to follow another Dragonborn came for him, his thoughts on this changed. He still doesn’t consider being Dragonborn to be that important but he no longer looks at it as passively as he used to and will often engage in dragon hunts if he isn’t doing anything for The Brotherhood. He has also had dealings with The Thieves Guild, Delvin and Bryjolf in particular, however he is not a part of the guild.
Personality
Tali is for the most part a no-nonsense kind of person. He is usually very serious and strict, but if he is close with someone shows that he does have a sense of humour and is willing to tease. He’s very even-tempered and very rarely has emotional outbursts though it has been known to happen on occassion. He cares deeply for those who he has accepted as family and even seems to have adopted a protectiveness akin to that of an older brother or father figure for them; often showing leiniency, compassion and sometimes the desire to sacrifice himself in ways when these people are involved. He has shown to be a sentimental person as well; his chambers in the sanctuary hold items from significant life moments or items he’s recieved from those he cares about.
When in a place he considers safe (The Sanctuary or a home he owns) he is not shy about his body and doesn’t get embarrassed when caught in the nude which sometimes happens more often than he would like as he has an obbession with cleanliness and takes baths often. Along with his obbession with cleanliness, he will lecture those he is close to if they are themselves dirty or their clothes are; though this only happens when they aren’t traveling or somewhere where it can’t be helped.
If due to his time as a slave or his current life as an assassin, it’s unclear but he does show sadistic and masochistic tendencies when engaging in certain activies and doesn’t hold any fear of being rejected for these. When it comes to other facets of life, he can appear cold and callous. He is not friendly or even sociable and outside of The Dark Brotherhood and will never be seen engaging in social activities such as parties or festivals on his own. He kills without mercy unless given a very good reason not to.
