The Bretons are the only race who worship both Y'ffre and Kynareth. I wonder how do they explain that.

I always wondered that myself.  I read somewhere that Y'ffre and Kynareth are considered the same by some, though I can't remember where I saw that.

They are considered the same by those who apparently like generalizing things. Just because they are both deitiess of nature, it doesn't mean they are one and the same. Their aspects seem very different. But do the Bretons discern that difference? Do they worship Y'ffre as the god who represents the laws of nature and Kynareth as the goddess of wind and sky? Or do they see these two in some different way? That is curious, no?

I sort of assume the difference between the two stems from their roles in society and the racial connotations between the . Y’ffre is a god of stories, lore, and song to the Mer as much as he is a Nature god whose sphere is heavily attributed to the forest. Kyne is much more strongly associated with air, rain, the sky, and the elements, and she is often invoked when praying for luck. Y’ffre is worshipped much more by Mer and Khajiit than men, and Kynareth is a goddess of the Nine whose own son, Morihaus, was the consort of St. Alesia and the second emperor of the Cyrodillian Empire. For a race of men that emphasizes the mixing of Mer blood into its population, worshipping both makes sense without too much overlap.

Actually, Khajiit worship their version of Kynareth. They have no respect for Y'ffre whatsoever, even dislike him.

As for Bretons, there are sources that say they also worship other Elven gods (such as Magnus and Phynaster), and they are the only human race ever to worship those. Judging by the historical timeline, I'd say Bretons don't know or care about Alessia and Morihaus - they didn't even exist as a race at that time, nor were they ever under the Ayleid rule.

Edit: Actually they might not have been around until the beginning of the first era. They came about as a race from the intermingling of Nedes and the Direnni elves which were pretty amazing. They had quite a few achievements in fields like Enchanting, Conjuration and Alchemy actually the witch Raven Direnni is said to have created the art of Enchanting even before the Psijics and she along with two other of her cousins were the leading figures that defeated the Alessian Empire, Corvus Direnni was the one that put down the laws of Conjuration, created the portal spells used widely later on by the Mages Guild and had some great observations and theories on wayshrines and the list of amazing people from Direnni clan goes on and on and there were people among them that were Bretons not having the highest positions but many of them had decent places within the clan and outside of it like battlemages and advisors to lords and kings etc.

The Bretons back then were recognized as lower class citizens and had more rights compared to the Nedes who were treated poorly to say the least and as livestock in many cases but maybe not as bad as the Ayleids treated the humans there. Also back then their characteristics were much sharper and close to the elves with pointy ears etc. After the fall of the Direnni Bretons took their place and also kept many of the elven gods in their pantheon. I think they even do not like Lorkhan / Sheor or Shor (Nords) / Shezzar (Imperials) and consider him as a trickster close to what the Elves think of him.

The one about enchanting, I suspect, is a lie. The Psijics were around muuuch longer than the Direnni and they probably discovered enchanting long ago, they just didn't shout about it on every corner and didn't share their knowledge with others - the Psijics, after all, believe that such knowledge that grants power should only be in worthy hands.

As for humans treated like livestock, well, they were illiterate barbarians who didn't know how to do anything but fight or do primitive work, do you think the Direnni should havetreated them like kings? The Bretons probably were more cultured.

And yes, it seems like the Bretons aren't big fans of Lorkhan. The Reachmen like him though.

Off topic questions - I have a nice idea for a character using 1-H and shield, along with off-hand spells.  However, I find it very tedious to switch back-and-forth between my shield and spells.  Is there an easy way to handle that, or is it something you just have to live with?  And, since I don't play mages very often, how do you handle favoriting your spells, since the list can grow to be very large (if you are a diverse mage)?  Thanks!

Now I remember why I have always been drawn back into my weapon-based characters!  :-)

I do it this way. Since the character is not a mage but a spellsword, the variety of spells he uses would be small, usually two or three. So I add them to favorites, as well as the shield, and assign keys to them all. The weapon in the right hand remains unchanged or I might switch it for a spell for ranged combat but that happens rare. Most of the time I'd switch between the shield and the favorited spells (which are usually healing or summons).

Yeah I also think the same but she was the first that made advances in enchanting for the rest of Tamriel.

Actually not much is known about the Nedes but from what is mentioned about the Nedes here and there in the lore it seems that they were not at all agressive like the Nords for example and on the contrary they always tried to live peacefully with the elves because they recognised that they were more advanced but they were exploitted continuously by the elves in more ways than one and ironically this ended up being a factor for the fall of the Direnni and the major factor for the fall of the Ayleids. So in this case it's not a matter of Nedes being warmongering barbarians it's just a case of the Elves exploitting them to the highest degree due to their advantage in arms, magic, knowledge etc. If you see at the lore even though elves are all about culture and knowledge and such they never tried to approach Men peacefully or govern them in a more peacefull manner. Since the beginning they only saw Men as a disposable resource and later on when Men turned back to bite them due to hundreds of years of exploitation then they started seeing them as enemies. Men might be jackasses due to their short life spans indeed but since the beginning whenever elves approached Men they only sought to exploit them and in the worst ways possible not just them being a simple pleb or slave working they went a bit deeper than that... Apart from the Nords and the Redguards the hatred of Imperials and the Empire and the Bretons was first induced by the Elves themselves to such a degree that it is in later eras. That 's why I could never see a side better over the other, both have major flaws like pride and greed because since Morrowind Bethesda put real life elements on every race and all over the ES lore/history along with the concept of ES which is degration of the world/society/culture (Morrowind/Red Mountain erruption, Hammerfell war, Oblivion Crisis, Crystal Tower destruction - Altmer losing everything and having the biggest social/cultural crisis ever in their history which still exists among them, Empire/Skyrim decline etc).

Yeah the Reachmen are a thing on their own.

@Feint - If you use Apocalypse mod there is a spell in alteration called Ocato's recital and you can store three spells in it to cast whenever the fight starts if you also have Imperious Races the Altmer have a racial ability you can unlock to autocast two spells under certain conditions you set like when you enter combat or when health is at 25% etc. Other than that what Thorien said above, I usually have a weapon in right hand and favorite on 1 then shield favorite at 2 and the rest keys from 3 up to 8 are the spells I 'm using the most and swap between them, there isn't that much of a delay changing between spell and shield.
