Do you view the Novice, Apprentice, Adept, Expert and Master Robes as sort of a School Uniform? 

Since you dont see any mages outside the College wear them exept Nelacar and Marcurio. Considering that Even old members like Wunferth who graduated wear common Blue Robes.

I've taken it as far as just not wearing them if my Mage dosent belong to the College yet. Or would you just wear random Uniforms? :D . 

This may be common Knowledge but i havent seen anything about this and im curious what youre Viewpoints are.

I don't think of them as uniforms because the Vigilants all wear novice robes and Tyranus and Tolan wear apprentice roves, and they show up outside the college enougth times for me to just think of them as another style of robe.  You already mentioned Nelecar and Marcurio, but there's also Talvas over in Solstheim a telvanni who's very unlikely to have any college ties.

Thought now that I think about it. While we see novice, apprentice, and adept robes outside the college we only see expert and master in the college and unenchanted expert robes can be bought at Radiant Raiment and they are called College Robes.  Also the style of robe has changed we learn from Labyrinthian that Aren and his associates all wore black hooded robes.  Which wouln't help the colleges reputation, having a bunch of reclusive mages all wearing black with their faces obscured.  Perhaps the college adopted the current style to appear less sinister and perhaps the black color of master robes is a nod to tradition?

I think of the robes as the College uniform. The fact that we see them outside the College seems to be because Bethesda didn't bother to create more robes styles. It would be more logical for the Vigilants to have their own uniform instead of wearing those robes, and the court mages all wearing the same robes, as well as random necromancers wearing the same robes, don't make much sence. I won't even start about Talvas. Also, when you are going around wearing College robes, people seem to think you are from the College.

They can sell them in Radiant Rayments even as College robes. Who knows how they got them, no one tells you that all the clothes in the shop are made by its owners. Also, the robes are quite expensive, so some desperate mage could sell them. Also, if you come to Whiterun on a low level, Balgruuf gives you an Imperial armor, and you can buy Imperial armor and weapons anywhere in Skyrim, yet you can't deny that Imperial armors are uniforms of the Imperial Legion, huh? Also you can buy Elven, Orcish and Dwemer equipment which, if we don't count game mechanics, can't be made by Skyrim blacksmiths. We can assume that the merchants might have bought them from other people.

I've matched up wearing robes to skill level, actual level and college progression before, but honestly the game just doesn't lend itself to it. The robes are ridiculously expensive, and the questline is too short to justify buying so many robes unless you really stretch it out. If I was on PC I'd without a doubt give myself robes after doing a certain class or getting to a certain level in a school - the school gives you robes at the start, why not later?

And I don't really see robes as uniforms, I see the reason why we only see Expert/Master robes on college teachers as a testament to their skill compared to other mages. It wouldn't feel right to me to have a bandit wizard with Expert robes because they shouldn't have the same skill level as a college professional.

For the College, yes I consider it a uniform.

For others like the Vigilants, it's more of an abstraction to save time/data although I assume that the Vigilants do wear similar-ish robes as uniforms.
