Ordinator Tip - Infinite Energy Shield

Hey readers, it's been awhile but I'm back with another Ordinator Tip, and this time I have a fully tested tip for you based on one of my recent characters. It's a relatively simple trick, but when using it without even getting into Apocolypse, Imperious, Aurora or any other mods, it's an insanely powerful little trick that essentially allows you to create Tanky-Mages without much effort. Oh and by Tanky-Mages, I mean Mages that can survive a Draugr Deathlord's Ebony Sword and only take about 30 damage, at Level 15...

    Requirements:

The Energy Shield Perk and Vancian Magic are the only technical requirements for this little trick, but Geomancer is definitely helpful. Since we're using Vancian Magic, it also requires you to have a partially filled spell-pool and doesn't work at all if you can't cast spells. You also cannot be wearing any armour at all while using these effects.

Energy Shield is a perk that allows you to resist 35% of Elemental and Physical damage (I don't believe it works against 'Magic' or 'Poison' damage effects) as long as you have more than 50% of your Magicka. It does this by taking that damage and delivering it to your Magicka instead of Health.

Vancian Magic changes how magic works, restricting you to a certain number of spells before requiring you to re-set this 'Spell Pool' by sleeping. The base is 20, but this trick works as long as you have 1/20. However, spells no longer cost Magicka and are twice as strong/last twice as long.

Geomancer is a perk that reduces physical damage by 30% as long as you aren't wearing armour and your channeling or casting a spell.

    The Trick:

So the trick essentially works around the fact that spells cast with Vancian Magic don't take up any Magicka, but also the bizarre way that this is enforced. For some reason, when you've got Vancian Magic any time your Magicka is drained or taken, it comes straight back to you at a rate that is far beyond any Magicka Regeneration that you can get without bugs. I don't know the exact speed, but it's pretty damn fast. I think the reason for it is because when you use your entire 'Spell Pool' you lose all of your Magicka and it's instantly drained no matter how many potions you drink, or any other effects.

Where this comes into play, is that each time your hit and lose Magicka because of Energy Shield, your Magicka is instantly restored to full, allowing you to take hits an keep having 35% of the damage taken by your Magicka, which then regenerates. So at all times, your only taking at maximum 65% of any damage that is being delivered to you, and this comes before AR or Geomancer as far as I can tell. That means, with the set I've listed above, you can ignore 65% of all physical damage whenever your casting a spell (with the added bonus of whatever your AR from Flesh Spells gives you) and 35% of any normal spells. It's fairly simple, but still incredibly powerful for any mage that doesn't mind having the smaller Spell Pool.

I mostly recommend this if your running Apocolypse and have Ocato's Recital to add a Flesh Spell, or if your focusing on Conjuration or Alteration. Destruction Mages might not get a use out of it, and I only see limited use for Illusionists, but it is still there.

    Nice!

Hmmmm, now what build were you playing when you learned that useful trick? ;D

You know, I have avoided taking the Vancian Magic branch of Alteration... dunno why... maybe because it feels so different and strange to me. But I really do need to give this branch a whirl at some point in time. It sounds like a game changer :D

I've always been rather interested in it, but haven't taken it just because this is my first character that it sort of fits with (Gameplay-wise) but yeah, they really can be game-changing. I dunno what it is about Alteration, but there isn't a single Ordinator perk that I wouldn't like to play around with at some point, just a really solid set of perks :D

Good find DB. This is pretty sweet, and I reckon a lot of fun to be had and probably the kick I need to try Vancian. RP wise, I wonder if shifting it away from the arcan and into a divine sphere for a Vancian Cleric would make it feel like divine protection? It'd be hard to convince onlookers that you're not blessed by some higher power when you shrug off a Deathlord's arrow while only in humble, House Dres robes.

Don't let Enai find out about this. He'll just nerf it like he did with Vancian Magic.

    Thanks Shin :D

Wait, Vancian Magic was nerfed? God what on earth was it like before, because at the moment it's still overpowered. Did you know you can cast Concentration Spells for an infinite time? Plus they get boosted (and I haven't tested it with the Metamagic stuff), still aiming to get a build out that focuses on that because you can get some insane numbers there.

Used to be 100 guaranteed casts with all associated perks (there was like 2 along with the main perk itself) and you could sleep anywhere for an hour, including a random bandit's bedroll, to get them all back. Concentration spells always had no cost with the perk but that's basically unavoidable without making the perk useless or disabling concentration spells.

The nerf actually replaced it with "Innate Magic" which gave you 4 spell slots and you got 1 back every 10 seconds you didn't cast, it was basically useless and Enai changed it back to a heavily nerfed Vancian Magic.
