Hello all, Tips and Tricks hosts Caesar Strong-Heart and Dragonborn1421 here with the first in what will hopefully be a long line of T&T Debates! We'll be bringing you discussions where you can debate certain subjects, and for this week we'll be discussing "Medium Armour" for Skyrim.

So, we all know that Skyrim has only two armour types (heavy and light), but how would recreate Morrowind's Medium Armour for Skyrim? You could do it in anyway that you see fit, just comment below and see what others think of your idea!

Personaly, I'd use a mix of Heavy Armour boots and gauntlets, with a Light Armour cuirass and helmet, possibly with the Heavy Armour pieces enchanted with Fortify Light Armour, and vice versa. So, how would you re-create this great armour type in the wonderous world of Skyrim?

So far we have: Glass-Bulky looking Light Armour with a fair amount of protection.

Nordic Carved-Low-armour rating Heavy Armour that's fairly light.

Wolf Armour-Very light Heavy Armour with relatively low armour rating.

Ancient Nord-Relatively light Heavy Armour with low protection.

Light+Heavy Mix-An even mix of Light and Heavy Armour.

Light+Flesh Spells-Mixing Light Armour with Flesh Spells.

Normal Bonemold Armour-Light set of Heavy Armour with medium AR.

Chitin Mix-Mix and matched Chitin Heavy and Light Armour.

Robe+Heavy-A robe with Heavy Armour boots, gauntlets and helmet.

Guard Armour-Decent Light Armour with a chainmail vest.

Orcish-Rather cumbersome, but it has medium stats.

To make this seem as lame as humanly possible, I will comment first.

I believe that Light/Heavy is the most common idea that people have and the one that most people look to first. Oh there in between light and heavy, Medium done, well that is certainly a way but there is a way that I feel is better, not pure armour in the same way but it works better for a halfway between Heavy and Light.

Running Light Armour combined with Flesh Spells is perfect to replicate Medium Armour, lets look at the benefits of running this over the half Heavy/Light combo.

    Pros:

    • Weighs a lot less
    • Gives you more consistent Armour Rating
    • You can still run Light Armour Perks

    Cons:

    • Requires Magicka to set up
    • Require more perks to get running
    • Requires constant reapplication

Interesting concept, guys. Doesn't really seem to relate to tips and tricks very much, but I'll bite anyway.

Dispensing with medium armor is actually one of the few examples of content cutting that I'm okay with. In fact, I think I actually prefer simplifying it to heavy, light, and unarmored. (On that note, I do wish they'd bring back a perk tree for unarmored, rather than forcing you to use flesh spells or go 0 AR unassisted.) There's not a whole lot of reason to differentiate between heavy vs. medium or medium vs. light, whereas there's a clear distinction to make when considering heavy vs. light.

As far as "recreating" medium armor in Skyrim ... I really wouldn't try. I think there are a few sets, like the Ebony Mail, Vampire Royal, etc. that would fall into a medium class if it existed. For purely aesthetic reasons, they basically already are medium armor. But like I said before, there's not much practical reason to pick apart small difference between heavy vs. medium and medium vs. light, so I actually prefer just lumping the "medium" armors with whichever style, light or heavy, they best identify.

Hmm, I didn't think of that. I suppose that would be a bit more suited for Spellsword-like characters. Being able to use perks like Wind-Runner would be a great help though.

I find this as a "Tip" or "Trick" to use Medium Armour. Some people aren't as cranky as you, Teccam.

Ah, I see. So we're proposing concepts of how best to simulate/(re)create a mechanic that doesn't exist in Skyrim, by using mechanics that do exist in Skyrim?

Sort of like how a witchhunter build might seek to "recreate" Mysticism by using extant spells and tactics to simulate the Mysticism spells seen in Morrowind/Oblivion. Or like how I "invented" a magic school for the Crystallurgist. Is that about right?

Pretty much for some, it's sort of complicated but rest assured we know (sorta) what we're doing, sort of, a little, sometimes.

Adding to your list Teccam is the hold guard armor that has chainmail. It is a combination of leather, cloth, and chainmail, making it very fitting.

Yes, that seems about right. Oh, and for the record, #Mediumarmourmasterrace

Don't forget the original Bonemold Armour. Of course I'd add Chitin to the list, you could mix and match one (sort of) set of armour and create something in the middle
