Writer’s Discussion No  38#   Why Do We Write?

It’s a simple question and can easily be argued that it doesn’t belong in a Writer’s discussion and yet it’s at the heart of every single story, blog and poem. This infringes on every chapter we post here in TSC.

It’s also a very personal question for we all have a multitude of reasons as to why we continuously write and add our stories to the ever growing collection of stories in TV.

This may have little or no bearing regarding useful writing recourses but it certainly will help readers and writers to know one another better. With this in mind I invite each and every one of you TSC Writers, whether you have a multitude of chapters, just the one odd story or even hjust a poem to consider taking part in this rather unorthodox Writer’s Discussion.

    Why do you write?

What do you enjoy the most about writing?

What do you hope to gain from writing?

What do you hope to achieve when all is said and done, and written?

    I love this topic! :)

Well, I write because I want to write stories and share them.  Always loved to write them. Writing gives me joy, and happiness. It keep me going, and gives me something to do. Writing is my main hobby. Hmm, it also gives me something I can't have in real life.

If I don't write, it's same as stopping breathing for me.

The writing process itself is an enjoyment, but I enjoy the feels it brings, too. Especially when I'm writing stuff that I don't usually write. The world building one thing I love to write, too. However, above all character dynamics and relationships is close to the heart. I occasionally celebrate a finished chapter, then jump right on the next one! :D

Oh, dear I haven't thought about this at all. I hope to gain a better writing skill in time, be better at story telling (even I'm told I'm good at it already), and to find contenment. I hope to give something for others too.

What do you mean "said and done, and written"? I hope you mean the projects because writing never ends, at least for me. I hope to achieve a acknowledgement when I get my fantasy book out, and maybe find acceptance. I hope to write more stories once a project is done, and written.

That's all I can think of for now.

    Why do I write?

This is going to get mushy. Sorry about that.........

I've mentioned my reasons so many times and nothing has changed. I'm still as determined to write chapters of my story and I will still do so in the years to come. The main reason I write is beacuse I like to see Alea's (The wife) face when I read funny parts of the story to her. I can feel her tense up when I read sad parts as well.

It's a nice feeling cuddling up to someone precious and reading your own work to them.

    She-Wolves... they are so emotional...

I like sharing my stories with others and having discussions about them. I never shy away from constructive criticism and when a situation occures when readers don't agree with my plot or character then things get interesting. listening to their viewpoints, keeping true to my own story and finding a balance to address said issues is hard work but at the end of it you can see the story is better off for it.

What do I enjoy the most about writing?

Again it will have to be where I can say to Aela that I've completed another chapter and I can read to her. If you have someone close to you as Aela is to me then give this a go; read a chapter to them. you watch their face and listen to them laugh while they cling on to every word.

(A word of warning. If they happen to burn a chicken pie and you include it in your story, expect a slap...)

What do I hope to gain from writing?

Become a better writer. Don't be fooled; this is hard work. It takes time and you need a thick set of scales. If you happen to be a poor writer when you start then keep at it and you will see your own writing skills develop.

I can say this without worrying what so ever to anyone takling offence. My writing was poor when I started in TSC. I'm not the best writer in TSC, far from it. Every day I see writers who are more skilled and far more wordy than me. You think that's going to stop me writing?

The main reason I started posting my work in TSC was to have feedback and advance my writing skills. I love reading my story to Aela and every time my skill improves so does the enjoyment of our time together.

What do I hope to achieve when all is said and written.

Well.... I'm in a unique position to everyone else here in TSC. I read my story to my wife as I have said here a few times. What this means is that as long as she enjoys it then I will keep writing it. As such there is no end of U.O.T.W. When TES 10 comes out I'll be playing it and adding the content to my story.

However; I know this isn't the case for most of the members in TSC. When your main story is finished what then? A new arc? A whole new character and story? Where will you go from there?

    Why do I write?

-A few reasons. First, I like to write. It may sound simple, but it's true. And I really like writing in the Elder Scrolls universe, and this site is the only place where I share my ES stuff. That brings me to reason #2: There's people that read, and like, my stuff. And as long as at least one person reads my stories, I shall write on.

What do I enjoy the most about writing?

-Hoo boy. I guess the thing I most enjoy about writing is the fact that, when you write, you are creating something artistic, something that other people can like and, perhaps more importantly, be inspired by. Writing is one of the very, *very* few forms of artistic expression I can do satisfactorily, which I guess is why I like it so much.

What do I hope to gain from writing?

-This may sound odd, but I hope to get the final product. I love finishing my writings, and even when it's done I have a tendency to look over it and- at the risk of sounding egoistical- revel in my creation. I'm as much a member of my audience as everyone else. So, when I write, I write to finish a story. Also, getting better at my writing never hurts... :P

What do I hope to achieve?

-My goals are: To make a *very* large collection of ESO story series (which will encompass the Alliance storylines, the Main Quest, the Guild quests, and the various DLCs), various Oblivion story series (of which A Pirate Queen is the first), and... Well, who knows what else? Moreover, I hope to learn and- more importantly- inspire. As I said earlier, as long as at least one person reads my stories, I shall write on.

Whew, that was a bit of a mental trip, writing this. Thanks for reading it!

Whenever someone mentions the 'Final Product' I find myself whining.... Never going to get there.

It's great to know others enjoy the creativity of writing and to be able to breathe life into characters.

    Caladran, Tenebrus. thanks for sharing.

I wonder who will be next.........

    Why do you write?

    I write...because I must.

When I write, it's because I have a story to tell. That's why I write poems and short stories. I don't live epics. My writing comes from my life. Sure, the final product may look nothing like it but I pull from the inspiration given around me and turn it into something that I can be proud of. Writing uses the exact same words we all use to express ourselves, yet we're able to convey so much more meaning through story-telling than we are through simple declarative sentences. So, I write to convey meanings that I enjoy exploring conceptually or meanings of great importance to me. Whether I do any good at it remains to be seen. I haven't yet quite struck that balance of subtlety and meaning. Tipped too far, and my story ends up in obscurity or simplicity. And I like subtext too much to let it go unbalanced.

What do you enjoy the most about writing?

The prose. I once read a poster on Pinterest that said something to the effect of, "You never learn to write stories; you only learn to write your current story." Voice has been a fairly difficult challenge for me. I've been writing in an academic voice for the past six years of my life. One-hundred percent of my writing between early 2011 and mid 2015 was academic. The professors will beat you over the head with the APA manual if they have to. If anyone can ever agree on its contents...

But, that is to say, I will now -- and forever-- naturally write in a haughty academic voice. And that makes editing a right bitch. Voice sets tone, and if all my stories have the same drab tone, I might as well try to repaint the Haywain with a palette of grey. Ya feel me?

So, while developing my prose and trying to find unique voices for my characters and narrator has been difficult and sometimes frustrating, it's also been quite enjoyable. It's slow going, but I can't escape the rush of learning. Thank your teachers, folks.

It's also nice to explore novel territory that offers something more than my typical angst.

What do you hope to gain from writing?

Emotions? Broadly speaking, anyway. I'm not sure what's left to gain. I already have this thing that's so enjoyable, I'll end up spending a pretty significant part of my life doing it. And you know how life is. It's busy, and it's only getting busier. It means filling those spots of personal time with the most important things. That could be the ones close to us, the things we do to keep them close, the things we do that capture us entirely and allow us to forget for a time that there is any world but the one we're building. So, I suppose I hope to gain more of what I already get -- something I can pour my heart into and lose myself in completely from time to time.

What do you hope to achieve when all is said and done, and written?

Hmm. A trophy with my name on it and a guest appearance on Oprah? I'll give us a shout-out. Really though, that's hard to answer. You know as well as I do that nothing is ever done. No project is ever perfect. But that's part of the beauty of it all, really. The endless striving for unattainable perfection makes for infinitely better works. But never perfect. What I aim to achieve when a project is completed is practical knowledge. Experience. Something to learn that I can apply to my next project. I always make a point to learn something new, even if it's small.
