When Liss first pitched the Two in Two idea to me I knew that it was an event I wanted to participate in. I find challenge builds like this one very enjoyable both to create and to play and the quick and dirty nature of these builds makes them easy to try out. The two skill limit was something I wanted to really push the envelope with so I decided to take no offensive skills to see how far I could get, which meant avoiding conflict as much as possible. Then I hit upon something, a ‘hidden’ skill tree that isn’t governed by practice in game nor does it influence your level. With this discovery the character really came into its own creating a duplicitous gameplay experience utilizing only two skills and resulting in two very different playstyles.

    -THE RECKLESS WAIF-

The Reckless Waif is a skilled infiltrator and thief. Possessed of a natural dexterity that makes infiltration almost second nature, the waif prides herself on completing only the most challenging of jobs. Success on this front has led to a sense of confidence that boarders on recklessness. Her cocky, devil may care attitude leads to close calls with the authorities of several holds, with the rogues and despots found in the seedy underbellies of Skyrim cities, and with the ruthless bandits that roam the wilderness. She has been caught a fair few times and is no stranger to being caged or beaten, but she has always managed to escape with her life, the same cannot be said for those who wished her harm…

Race: Breton Female. I chose this purely for aesthetic reasons in actuality any race or gender could be used. However, there is some nice synergy between the Breton racial power Dragonskin and the Atronach Stone.

Stone: Atronach, both for its defensive spell absorption and for the plus 50 magicka. This character doesn’t cast many spells and will rarely cast more than once per fight so the de-buff to magicka regeneration isn’t much of a concern.

    Skills: Alteration, Sneak, Lycanthropy

Stats: M:0 H:1 S:1 I fiddled with this ratio a lot and finally settled on an even split between health and stamina. This will leave us at 220 for each when we hit level 25. We don’t need a lot of either for this characters purpose since most of our fighting will be as werewolves, at these levels we will have enough of each for the occasional scrap whether we stand our ground or flea for our lives. The Atronach Stone combined with the appropriate perks in Alteration means that we’ll never need to increase our magicka stat in order to have enough to cast our spells.

Weapons: Daggers, the waif is not a combat character, that being said, Skyrim is a dangerous place and only a fool would go unarmed. I carried a steel dagger for most of the play-through which was useful for dispatching the stray skeever. Major fights will use beast form almost exclusively.

Apparel: Any nondescript clothing with a mage hood, I personally like the rough spun tunic and novice hood combo you can get in Helgen at the start of the game. Eventually I ended up wearing the red Dunmer Outfit with the Shrouded Shoes.

Gear: Ring of Hircine, Ring of Instinct, Ring of the Hunt

    Shouts: Howl of Terror

    Powers: Beast Form

    Perk Spread Level 25

Sneak: The primary skill of the waif. An orphan growing up on the streets, it was her stealth that kept her belly full, kept clothes on her back, and kept a roof over her head. Skilled to the point of recklessness she spent her youth sleeping in the attics and broom closets of wealthy lords and raiding their larders by night. When caught she would be jailed for a period of time, before moving on to another city and repeating the cycle. She never crossed the line though, and is no murderer, so stay away from the right side of this tree.

Perks: (Stealth 4/5, Muffled Movement, Light Foot, Silent Roll) All of these perks play into the stealthy and agile nature of the waif.

Alteration: The secondary skill of the waif, Alteration magic is what sets her apart from your standard sneak thief. Following along that same sense of passivism it makes sense that the one school the waif would excel at is the one focused on defense, it doesn’t hurt that this is also the school that governs Telekinesis. While that spell in particular is very useful in thievery the focus of this school is defense and the waif uses it for that very reason. Key perks are going to be the Mage Armor perks since the waif will be wearing clothes and robes.

Perks: (Novice-Expert Alteration, Alteration Dual Casting, Mage Armor 3/3, Magic Resistance 3/3, Stability) As previously stated the main goal of this skill is defense, keeping the waif alive. It is convenient that the spell list of alteration also includes some utility spells like Telekinesis and Ash Shell/Rune adding some versatility to the build.

Lycanthropy: This is the third “skill” of the build and allows for a greater variety of play. Lycanthropy is the only real offense that this build can mount, but what an offense it is! Lycanthropy completely turns the rest of the build on its head. While the waif is sneaky and harmless, the beast is anything but. With this skill the waif can turn the tables on her enemies in dramatic and devastating fashion.

Perks: (Bestial Strength 4/4, Animal Vigor, Gorging, Savage Feeding, Totem of Terror) In the end I took all the perks simply because I could though in truth I only used the Howl of Terror since I never finished the Companions questline. Get Savage Feeding as soon as possible as it will make leveling this skill much faster.

    The Waif

Generally good natured, the waif sees her thieving as a game, a way to test her skill and wit. If she’s caught she harbors no ill will for whoever bested her because they did just that, they played the game better and deserve their reward. To this end she will not fight hold guards who apprehend her instead she willingly goes to jail, though she will almost always attempt a break out. Alternatively she will be more than happy to return the stolen item and even pay a fee for her transgression, just don’t be surprised when that same item disappears on the morrow, it’s called a rematch. This same sense of fair play prevents her from bribing her way out of situations. She sees that as cheating.

Telekinesis: This spell is great fun for making thefts from the safety of the shadows. There were many occasions where I could see the target item right after entering the house, instead of creeping across a well-lit room I would use this spell to quickly retrieve the item and make my exit. Be careful because this spell does make noise when cast alerting the residents to your presence. However, if you’re quick you should be able to steal the item and leave before anyone sees you.

Ash Shell/Rune: Ash shell is the closest thing we have to a trap in Skyrim. The way I saw it Ash Shell is a trip wire or noose that tangles the enemy and removes them as a threat for a short period of time while they extricate themselves from the trap. Runes make a lot of noise when placed so use that to your advantage. Set your trap and whistle to get their attention, remember to smile smugly as you waltz past their prone form with their precious heirlooms in hand. Alternatively this spell could be used as a way to slow pursuit, almost like caltrops that the waif tosses behind her they aren’t deadly but they will buy you some precious time.

Spider Scrolls: One of my favorite tools in Skyrim and one that the waif makes great use of. These spiders are not used offensively though technically the possibility is there. Instead they are use as distractions when the waif needs to make a getaway. One of these spiders is not very threatening or powerful, however they will plunge heedlessly into combat with anything, distracting your pursuers and buying you some precious seconds to escape.

Hook and Rope (Klimmek’s Supplies): This one is optional depending on your view of glitches in the game. The idea behind this is that the waif uses a grappling hook to climb up walls and the like to reach elevated platforms that are otherwise inaccessible. This is one of my favorite glitches in the game and one I’ve used on many occasion. Great for short cuts to the treasure, and perfectly suited to the waif. If you aren’t familiar with this glitch a guide on how to perform it can be found here.

    The Beast

Not all of Skyrim’s denizens are willing to live and let live, in these cases the waif will try to escape and avoid conflict using every trick and trap she knows. On rare occasions even this will not be enough, it is then that the beast will rage forth clearing a trail through the mangled corpses of those who wished her harm.   This is the duplicitous nature of the Reckless Waif. On the one hand she is your standard sneak-thief, slinking from shadow to shadow and purloining unprotected valuables. On the other hand she is the raging beast, an elemental force of destruction and savagery. Beast form is a last resort and used almost exclusively in self-defense. Sometimes you’re going to be spotted and the clumsy swipes of your measly dagger are not going to cut it. When backed into a corner and surrounded by bandits bent on killing you the beast will be your only hope.

The Flesh Beast: I’m sure many of you already know about this technique, I myself have seen it used a dozen times in other werewolf builds. In case you need a refresher the Flesh Beast involves using the Flesh Spells from the Alteration school of magic to increase your beast forms defense. The great thing about this technique is that the Beast is considered unarmored and therefor also benefits from the Mage Armor perks. The Alteration Dual Casting and Stability perks are key to making the most of this ability; together they will give you duration of over three minutes.

The Ring of Instinct: The Dragonborn DLC introduced us to the Frostmoon pack of werewolves and their unique set of rings. Unfortunately only two of the four rings have a power that is in my opinion worthwhile, the Ring of Instinct being one of them. When worn it will slow time for 20 seconds when the wearer transforms into a werewolf. This is a life saver since, in the waif’s case these transformations are often being performed while under attack or being pursued.

The Ring of the Hunt: The other ring that has a worthwhile power, the Ring of the Hunt, allows the beast form to regenerate health like normal. While this ring sees far less use than the previous one it still has its place in the waif’s bag of tricks. There will be rare occasions where your goal is to clear out a cave or camp or to hunt down a particular target. It is these occasions that the waif will use this ring which adds a little more resilience to the beast form.

    Gameplay

The Reckless Waif is first and foremost a classic thief character. Her goal is to get in, get the treasure, and get out without ever being seen. Every quest should be approached with the mind set of never seeing combat. However, there will be times when the waif will fail in her stealth and you’ll be forced to make an escape or defend yourself. First you should simply try and flee the scene, if you have them now is the time to use any invisibility potion or vampire dust and try to shake your pursuers. Ash Rune is a great trap spell that can be set in a hall or doorway right behind you as you escape. If you’re lucky it will completely end any pursuit giving you plenty of time to escape. At lower levels use Ash Shell to accomplish the same thing the drawback to this spell is you need line of sight to land it, if you can see them they can see you. Finally, distract them with one of your spider scrolls, alone they are highly unlikely to kill anyone themselves but, as you can imagine, a spider the size of a dog that happens to be on fire tends to grab one’s attention.

If all of the above methods fail, and sometimes they will, there is one final, brutal, trick up the waif’s sleeve, lycanthropy. When backed into a corner and out of options the waif will call upon this inner beast to clear a path of destruction. The optimal approach to combat involves the following, cast your strongest flesh spell and make sure you are wearing the Ring of Instinct, transform and slaughter anyone dumb enough to stand in your way while you make your escape. The goal of the beast form is not to clear the dungeon in most circumstances, instead it is used to facilitate an escape, your Howl of Terror should clear most enemies right off the bat while your superior damage and stagger ability should easily dispatch the few who don’t flee.

    Suggested Quests

Thieves Guild Questline: The obvious choice for a thief.

Special Job Quests: In line with the thieves guild questline Delvin and Vex will also have various jobs for you to do on the side. Since we only specialize in Sneak it’s best to avoid the jobs that require Pickpocket or Lockpicking. This means we will only accept “The Numbers” Job from Delvin while we will accept all but “The Heist” Job from Vex.

The Companions Questline: Only necessary up to “The Silver Hand” in order to gain Lycanthropy after that feel free to leave the mercenary band. At first I had a hard time justifying this from a roleplaying perspective however there are a few hooks that would merit the waif joining the Companions. First they could be a burglary target; Kodlak does have one of the Stones of Barenziah in his possession. Second the waif is skilled at scouting, infiltration, and retrieval making her particularly suited to reclaiming the fragments of Wuuthrad. Finally Aela is a thief herself, look it up, so there is a precedent of thieves joining the Companions.

No Stone Unturned: Acquiring these rare gems provides us ample opportunity to practice our skills and tricks and it ties in nicely with the other Thieves Guild quests. Also the presence of a stone provides some nice roleplaying hooks to get this character into situations that they otherwise would have avoided.

Destroy the Dark Brotherhood: The waif believes in the primary tenets of the Thieves Guild and would never become an assassin. However, Astrid is in possession of one of the Stones of Barenziah making entry into sanctuary necessary. The way I see it the waif kills Grelod for revenge being a former resident of the orphanage until she came of age. The Arentino connection and eventual kidnapping are “happy” coincidences, one lets you pin the murder on a shadowy organization and the other leads to one of the stones. Killing the assassins is optional though I suggest becoming a werewolf before attempting this quest.

College of Winterhold Questline: At least until you gain access to the Archmage’s quarters. Again this is another quest that is necessary to complete the No Stone Unturned quest. Your natural skill in alteration should be enough to gain entrance to the college, from there you just need to locate the stone.

The Man Who Cried Wolf/Elisif’s Tribute: There’s a rumor that the former owner of Proudspire Manor possessed an unusual gem, gaining access to his vacant manor will require performing a few tasks for the Jarl as well as some deep pockets. Hopefully the rumor pans out and this rumored gem is in fact the final Stone of Barenziah.

Infiltration: Help Stalleo regain his family home by infiltrating the fort and opening the front gate. This is a great thematic quest for the waif and comes with an appropriate and useful reward.

    Conclusion

There you have it my entry for the Two in Two event, The Reckless Waif, which some of you may have noticed is partly inspired by the Magic: The Gathering card of the same name. This build was a true joy to play, and limiting yourself to only two skills was actually quite freeing. My choice of skills also allowed me to playtest this build a few times during the two weeks of the event, since Sneak and Alteration are both rapid levelers and are both easily power leveled. It is quite possible to have both skills at 100 within two hours of starting the character, via exploits and glitches of course. I thoroughly enjoyed both the exploit and the honest way of playing this character and would recommend either depending on your available game time. Anyway, thank you all for reading and I look forward to any comments you may have concerning this build or the event in general.

Ha! I'm glad you enjoyed the pitch, Vargr. A very cool contrast you've created with the unassuming waif and then Beast Form. It is funny that Alteration considers Beast form non armored. Ah, Klimmek's supplies. What was your highest flesh spell? I know Oakflesh is a guaranteed find, but I nearly popped out of my chair when a dungeon yielded Stoneflesh for my mage.

I don't remember where but I'm pretty sure that Stoneflesh is guaranteed in one or two dungeons.  I went all the way to Ebony and then started the Master Alteration quest and realized that you can't complete it without becoming Dragonborn (no dragons = no dragon heartscales) ;P

Hmm. i know i just had to hedge mage spells, Oak flesh is guaranteed at Shroud Hearth Barrow. Stone flesh isn't, but I could be wrong. It can appear in leveled loot lists, but not in a set location. As always though, I always get sheeeeet drops; warhammers for my mages and spell tomes for my non-casters. :D And Haha on the heart scales.

Very cool backstory and setup.  Klimmick's Supplies, had no idea...at all.

That's probably what I was thinking of.  The real trick was on my optoin B playthrough no matter what level I was I couldn't purchase the ebonyflesh tome from Tolfdir without leveling speech so I had to stick with Ironflesh for the playthrough.  Not a big deal since everything is stuck at a low level you absolutely wreck face with beast form.

Thanks John.  Klimmecks Supplies is a awsome glitch that I thinks adds something to the game that should always have been there anyway.

This could certainly make for a fun thief gamethrough with the use of lycanthropy. It's also nice that lycanthropy is the last resort rather than a main focus of the gameplay.

Not going to lie, when I saw the name of this build I read it as The Reckless Waifu. Overall great build.

Cool stuff Vargr! Clever use of skills to create something unique and interesting, along with RP and backstory to create something which feels organic :) The duality of this not-so-fragile waif and the inner beast is compelling stuff! Will you continue beyond level 25, or return to the character at some point? Great build! :)
