This is my third entry in the Crossworlds2 event.  I must say that these builds have been a lot of fun to play and create.  This is also the final build in my series of builds based on classic monsters, and acts as a sort of foil to the other builds.  The previous five builds all focus on playing the monster in Skyrim, this build will instead seek out and destroy those monsters as they are found in Skyrim.  Today I present The Slayer.

“The Blades were good at keeping secrets.  They didn’t write down much.  They passed information carefully between their spies in every province, to their elite members that protected the Emperors.  Even amongst their members, they kept much secret.”

Excerpt from “The Rise and Fall of the Blades”

The Blades hail from many walks of life, and each has their own mission given to them by the Emperor.  Many of them work alone pursuing the Empire’s interests as they see fit.  Their secretive nature and lone wolf mentality means that often times two agents could be working together and be unaware that they are both part of the same organization.  The Slayer is one such individual, a loner among the blades, and one uniquely skilled among their order for a specific task, or tasks as it may be.  The Slayer seeks out and destroys the unnatural, the supernatural, and the abominations of nature.  His branch of the Blades was created after the Oblivion Crisis and their job is to watch the very citizenry for deviation, for daedra worship, for anything that might lead to another cataclysm.  Their goal is to eliminate these threats before they become widespread and destructive.

Race:  Any, the Blades recruit from all walks of life and all races.  If you want to optimize starting skill bonuses then Bosmer and Khajiit are the best fit, each receives a skill bonus in four of the below skills, with the +10 bonus being one of the primary skills.

Stone:  Thief or Warrior to help in leveling our primary skills.  Later I switched to the Atronach (around level 20).  The absorption mechanic makes you very resilient against magic users.

Primary Skills:  Archery, One Handed, Light Armor, Sneak

    Secondary Skills:  Alchemy, Enchanting

    Stat Placement:  M:0 H:1 S:2

Weapons:  The Slayer uses an array of weapons specific to the prey he is hunting they include the following; silver sword, wooden stake, and crossbow alongside his more mundane steel sword and dagger.

Apparel:  The Slayer wears light and durable armors, anything that can stand up to prolonged journeys in the wild and remote places of the world.

Shouts:  None, we are not Dragonborn.

Archery:  One of the signature weapons of the Slayer is his crossbow, an ingenious contraption developed by the ancient dwarves.  The cross bow allows for a quick initial shot but has a long reload time, you’ll only be able to get off one or two shots before the enemy closes on your position, the perks here are chosen to make those initial shots as devastating as possible.

One Handed:  This is the Slayers primary form of combat, wielding two blades, usually sword and dagger he is a whirlwind on the battlefield.   The Slayer’s weapons are many and varied as he customizes his approach to each supernatural entity he is commissioned to destroy, however the bulk of these weapons take the form of a blade.

Light Armor:  The work of the Slayer is prone to extended journeys in the backwoods and remote places of Skyrim.  To this end the Slayer is most interested in rugged clothing that can withstand long wear and tear and is light and flexible enough to be worn at all times yet sturdy enough to serve as protection from the many dangers that lurk in the wilds and stalk the roads of Skyrim.

Sneak:  The Slayer knows well the value of surprise and has become adept at being unseen until he has carefully scouted the lair of his target.  The Light Foot perk also represents the familiarity that the Slayer has with mechanical devices rendering most physical traps useless against him.

Alchemy:  The Slayer is well educated in many areas and the alchemical arts are no exception.  Versed in both medicine and poison he is still merely a dabbler, capable of mixing rudimentary salves and poisons as the situation demands.

Enchanting:  Only capable of the most basic cantrips and spells, the Slayer is not a mage by any definition, he is however very capable when it comes to binding aetheric elements to weapons and armors.  He uses this knowledge to customize weapons for specific threats, creating tools of unparalleled lethality for the target at hand.

A note on Lockpicking:  The Slayer is very familiar with mechanical contraptions represented thus far by his use of the crossbow and his immunity to basic traps from the light foot perk.  It stands to reason that he would have extensive knowledge on the mechanics of locks and lock based traps.  Now I have never perked this skill on any of my characters, I never saw the need when any lock in the game can be picked with patience, deduction, and a dozen lock picks.  If you have trouble picking locks then you may find the need to perk this skill to maintain that role-play aspect of this character.

An important part of any role-play is the origin story.  You need to know how you got to Helgen in the first place.  The Slayer by trade is a vagabond, wandering the back ways of the empire and prosecuting the Emperor’s justice as and when he deems it necessary.  They usually follow half whispered rumors and tales of fancy.  The one’s that no one believes are true are the same ones that Slayer’s fear might be, and so they find themselves pursuing these unlikely leads.  So you find yourself heading north to the province of Skyrim following the off-hand comment of a skooma riddled Khajiit merchant, who hinted at strange howling in Whiterun.  Once across the border you found yourself entering a Stormcloak camp, looking mostly for news about the comings and goings of the region.  It was while you were bartering with the quartermaster that the empire struck.  You immediately surrendered to the forces of your liege intending to explain your situation or at the very least slip away at the earliest opportunity, an opportunity that presents itself just before your head leaves your shoulders.

The Slayer’s are a loosely defined branch of the Blades martial order.  They were born out of what is now called the Oblivion Crisis.  The realization that disparate bands of witches and daedra worshippers could wreak such wanton destruction and very nearly destroy all of Tamriel was a wake-up call for the empire.  The Blades saw that all of creation could slip away, that everything was balanced on a knife’s edge.  The Slayers were thus formed to hunt down these groups and to eradicate them before they became a threat.  The insular and secretive nature of these groups dictated that the authority of the Slayer be kept equally secret so as to not spook the targets.  Slayers are given free reign and dispensation, allowed to mete out any judgment, by the Emperor’s decree.

The targets that the Slayer’s seek out are many and varied they encompass all forms of daedra worship and unnatural magical practices as well as the abominations that are often created by these groups.  They seek out any daedric cults especially those devoted to the more destructive entities of Mehrunes Dagon and Molag Bal.  They seek out any unnatural creation like the undead, especially the creations of necromancers.  As well as any abomination of the natural order such as the Hircine created lycanthropes.  At the core of many of these is the daedra who are the ultimate adversary.  The Slayer seeks to frustrate the plans of all people and daedra who try to subvert the natural order of creation.

For the sake of this series of builds I have listed five targets for the Slayer below.  Each one corresponds to one of the previous monster builds.  While before you played as the monster this time you will be hunting them down as the Slayer.

Windhelm:  The people of Windhelm are being terrorized by a serial killer.  While not normally your area of interest you notice disturbing details about the victims corpses that lead you to believe more may be at stake than the lives of a few serving girls.  There are quite a few parallels that can be drawn between the Butcher of Windhelm and the Chirurgeon character.

In the end the Butcher is just a man, and you found him out before he could complete his macabre experiment in resurrection.  Execute him by any means necessary, and destroy the notes that may lead others down his twisted path.

Role-play:  Kill Calixto and destroy the Necromancers Amulet as well as the Butcher’s Notebooks (toss them in the ocean).

Solstheim:  The shores of southern Solstheim are being stalked by an amphibious monster, clearly some kind of daedric abomination.  It falls to you to eradicate this menace.  Scour the coast until you find the nameless horror that lurks beneath its turbulent waters.  The Creature of Lake Ilinalta might be a similar monster spawned from the plains of Oblivion.

Role-play:  Find and kill as many Lurkers’ as you can, specifically the ones terrorizing the coast.  Avoid the Black Books; no good can come from dealing with a daedric prince.

Haafingar:  You are approached by a group of warriors calling themselves the Dawnguard.  They are vampire hunters and in that way share many similarities with your own mission.  Help them defeat the rising vampire menace in Skyrim.  A vampire lord in western Skyrim has tired of skulking in the shadows; he now seeks to establish himself as a legitimate power, much like a Forgotten Knight that descended out of the Pale Pass.

Role-play:  There are only a few ways to permanently kill a vampire, decapitation, fire, and a wooden stake through the heart.  Use the wooden sword to deliver the final blow when you’re fighting vampires, since a stake through the heart is the only sure way to keep them dead.

Falkreath:  The mauling of a child by a man-beast has brought you to the pine forests of Falkreath.  Find and slay the werewolf responsible.  Many who receive the curse of lycanthropy do not have the fortitude to resist or control their bestial urges.  It is up to you to find this Cursed one and deliver him a lasting peace.

Role-play:  The silver sword is your friend when you finally come face to face with the beast that is Sinding.

Solitude:  You hear a rumor of strange noises and lights coming from a nearby cave.  While most believe the account to be nothing more than superstitious nonsense you have a nagging feeling that it might be something more sinister.  You decide to check the cave and discover that an ancient evil is trying to resurrect itself, to become an “again walker” or as the ancient nords called them, an Aptrgangr.

Role-play:  The great thing about this quest is how well it fits with the two characters, both the Slayer and the Aptrgangr; role-play wise simply complete the quest as instructed.

The Slayer carries a wide array of arms to combat the many dangerous monsters that he is tasked with hunting down.  Each beast has its own weaknesses and generations of slayers have passed down the best techniques for dispatching them.  After your escape from Helgen you will need to reequip yourself for the hunt.  Your first order of business should be to find the Dawnguard; they are brothers-in-arms with your mission and will be able to supply the necessary armaments.

The Crossbow – This rare archaic weapon is a staple of the Slayers kit.  A bolt fired from one of these weapons packs quite a punch and is used to soften difficult targets or dispatch weak ones before entering combat.  Many encounters can be ended swiftly with a well place bolt.  I suggest enchanting this weapon with repel undead, this will allow for multiple shots as the enemy flees instead of attacks.

Note:  The explosive bolts are great utility options for this build allowing for further customization based on the enemy at hand.   The fire version is by far the most generally useful but the ice and shock versions have their place i.e. dunmer mages and ash spawn on Solstheim.

Dawnguard Armor – The Dawnguard have developed an armor set that is well suited for hunting and slaying the unnatural abominations that stalk the land of Skyrim.  Light and durable this armor will see the Slayer through many dangers safely.  Below are the suggested enchantments for this armor set.

      Chest – Fortify Stamina

      Head – Fortify Archery

      Hands – Fortify One Handed

      Feet – Muffle, Fortify Sneak

Note:  An alternative armor set is Linwe’s which is only obtainable through the Thieves Guild side quests.  It is a great looking set that comes pre-enchanted, if you are up for a little thievery.

The Wooden Stake – Every enemy has a weakness the knowledge of which has been collated for generations among the Slayers.  The wooden stake is a prime example of this.  It is well known that vampires are powerful undead who are difficult to kill permanently.  The Slayers have discovered a simple wooden stake stabbed through the heart of the creature will forever sever its link to the mortal realm.  I suggest enchanting this weapon with soul trap or fiery soul trap to simulate the permanent death this weapon causes then put it in your favorites menu.  When the vampire is weak equip this weapon in your off hand and deliver the final blow.

Note:  Equipping a weapon in the left hand will cause it to be drawn instantaneously, skipping the unsheathing animation of the weapon.

The Silver Sword – Another tailored weapon designed for dispatching a specific foe.  Silver, a symbol of purity, is anathema to the unnatural abomination and those with corrupted blood.  The silver sword is the perfect weapon for slaying many of the foul beasts that the Slayer hunts.  The silver sword does an extra 20 points of damage to undead and werewolf enemies making it the go to weapon for most of the Slayer’s targets, I suggest doubling down on the anti-undead nature of this weapon by enchanting it with fire damage.  Eventually you will switch out this weapon with Dawnbreaker for undead enemies but hang on to it for the lycanthropes.

Salves and Unguents – Lacking in restorative magic the Slayer depends upon his alchemical knowledge to keep himself in fighting condition.  Below are some simple mixtures that are a staple of any Slayer’s kit.

Root and Berry Tea – This potent tea is a favorite among the Dunmer of Solstheim as a pick-me-up morning beverage.  The slayer has concentrated this down to a potent elixir that sharpens the senses making him significantly more effective in combat.  Fortify Marksmen, Fortify One Handed.

Ingredients:  Canis Root, Juniper Berries, Hanging Moss

Common Poultice – As the name implies this is a simple poultice that can be made with readily available ingredients.  Restore Health, Fortify Health.

      Ingredients:  Blue Mountain Flower, Wheat

Cave Salve – While not as potent as the common poultice, this mushroom paste can be a life saver when trekking the deep caverns of Skyrim, where its ingredients are more readily found.  Restore Health.

      Ingredients:  Blisterwort, Imp Stool

The Slayer plays like your average ranger or scout character.  The nuance comes from weapon choice and approach to combat specific to each enemy type.  Standard adventuring will see the Slayer relying on his crossbow to soften or eliminate enemies before engaging in melee where he will switch to a dual wielding style of sword and dagger combat.   Remember to switch out weapons for the specific foe i.e. silver sword for undead and lycanthropes and wooden stake for vampires.  For more mundane foes feel free to upgrade to better quality weapons, personally I like the look of steel weapons and stuck with them for my whole play through.

While the Slayer’s calling is a noble one, he is not above using the enemies own weapons against them.  It is this tactical acumen that allows him to overlook creatures like Serana and the Companions.  They may be abominations created by the meddling of daedric princes, but unlike most of his targets they are not a danger to the empire.  In fact they may be useful in defeating the threats that the Slayer faces.  In this way the Slayer allows for their existence and will even call upon their skills when necessary, but he will never trust them and will be the first to put them down should they ever turn on the people of the empire.   The Slayer would never become a werewolf or vampire, except in the direst of circumstances, such as entering the Soul Cairn for the first time.  However you should cure yourself at the earliest opportunity.

This is my third entry for the Crossworlds 2 Event, and I’m very glad I was able to complete it in time.  The character is loosely based on the characters of Abraham Van Helsing from Dracula with a healthy dose of Buffy from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Robert E. Howard’s Solomon Kane character This is the last of my series of builds based on classic monsters for the rest of the series please visit my page and let me know what you think.

As always thanks for reading and thanks to the community for making The Vault such a great place to be.

I knew is was about Buffy right from the title. Man, that wooden stake is such a cool idea! Well done!

By the way, in the tv show's last season, Buffy used that powerful slayer weapon: an ax with a wooden stake coming out of its hilt. To me that sounds like a good reason to use the Dawnguard War Axe.

Doing Griffith from the Insible Man, or the Phantom of the Opera would be neat ideas

Wait, this was based off Buffy?! Awesome! I thought you were doing a Van Helsing build, but this is even better

  • December 20, 2015
Yeah my original inspiration was Helsing/Kane build. But as I played it slowly morphed into a Buffy build. The end result is more Buffy than anything else and is what made me name it the Slayer. I even created a female khajiit named Buff'ii for my second play through.
