    The Royal Assassin

An Assassin is a King's most trusted courier, ensuring his messages are heard by even the most unwilling recipients. -M:TG

    INTRODUCTION

The Royal Assassin is a build for players who prefer stealth but want a slightly different approach than just going to an enemy camp in crouch mode and sniping everything down with a bow. Here, you will have to rely on skill in order to perform the perfect assassination or die trying. You will use illusion and daggers primarily as a form of offense with prepared poisons when situation calls for it. Range combat will mostly consist of poison application from a distance and will not be perked in order to avoid the temptation of sniping targets.  This build can be played as is but there are several mods that will also be mentioned in order to improve the experience and challenge.  Suggestions for roleplay will also be provided later.

    THE BUILD

    Character:

    Race:
    Imperials
    - You are of noble descent.

Armor: Light (Nightingale, Dark Brotherhood, Regal Assassin are good examples)

Weapons: Dagger (Any kind, non-broken enchant/upgrade), Bow (Or Crossbow)(No enchants/upgrades)

Ammunition: Any regular arrow/bolt (No magic bolts)

Stats: 3 Magicka / 2 Health / X Stamina - Magicka should be raised primarily until you have a well sized pool to constantly control any encounter with minimal potion use.  You may choose to raise stamina after if needed for carrying / running or raise health faster.

Standing Stone: Lover / Shadow / Lord - Lover for those who prefer to level quickly for midgame fun.  Shadow is for those who plan to roleplay the Royal Assassin with restrictions and mods.  Lord is for any challenge seekers who are playing with highest mod values and game difficulty and need a bit of help.

    Shouts:

Aura Whisper - Used to activate your extreme assassin senses and tracking abilities.

Bend Will - Allow your reputation to win over a new ally and 'spare' their life in return.

Dismay - The sight of you coming in for the kill can turn away those weak at heart.

Marked for Death - When a foe has forced you into a duel (without stealth).

Throw Voice - To help make new paths when all other paths are closed.

Slow Time - Awaken the assassin within and take advantage of extreme reflexes.

    Major Perks:
Illusion - Use your presence to have various effects on the minds of enemies.
One Handed - Main form of assassination and damage output.
Alchemy - Used to control an encounter in your favor and secondary damage output.
Sneak - Your primary way of moving around in stealth.

    Minor Perks:
Archery - Used for ranged application of poison. (Do Not Perk)
Blacksmith - Maintain your tools of death. (Best used later in the game)
Light Armor - Maintain your protection from death. (Invest as needed for survival purposes)
Speech - Pay off guards and intimidate people to give information. (For Roleplay only)

    Example Perk Tree

Armsman - Main damage increase for overall performance.

Agile Defender - Give a boost to your survival.  Only apply points as needed, not required to max.

Assassin Blade - Helps with killing with main weapon.

Muffled Movement - Best early game stealth modifier if no shoes of same type available.

Silent Roll / Silence - Help move quickly to make the kill before target turns around.

Shadow Warrior - Utility against ranged threats.

Stealth - Can be raised further if needed but not required as detection will be good as is.

Alchemist / Poisoner / Concentrated Poison - Used for making powerful poisons and multiple uses.

Green Thumb - A good perk for those who plan to gather their own ingredients.

Purity / Benefactor - If you plan to use potions as healing / buffing item as well, these perks help.

Expert Illusion - Ideal perk for most illusion spells you can use later on.  I don't bother with Master as it takes too long to cast and chances are if you were ever in an overwhelming situation to need it, you'll be dead before you even use it.

Hypnotic / Aspect / Rage - Overall strength of your illusion spells to effect higher level targets.

Animage / Kindred Mage / Master of Mind - Very good perks that will allow you to definitely be in control of majority of your encounters.

Quiet Casting - A must have for your build.  This allows your 'presence' to be known without actually revealing your location.

Dual Casting - For those not using the mods, you might have to consider this option to help against higher level targets.  Otherwise, do not bother as you're more efficient with a dagger out too.

    HOW TO PLAY YOUR CHARACTER

    Early Game:

Before you can even begin, its best to get your hands on some illusion spells.  You can gather some wood at Riverwood for gold then head over to the trader to try your luck there.  If not available, you may be forced to travel to Winterhold and obtain some spells there (Equip the novice hood in order to have magicka to pass some tests).

Now that you have frenzy, you can build up your abilities and become an assassin.  Your early method of killing will be to stealth kill whenever the opportunity shows itself and to use night time / shadows as your cloak to pull off the deed.  Whenever you are detected or have to deal with multiple foes, you can use your frenzy ability to help lighten the load and if you made / found any poisons, please use them liberally.  As you travel, it is also best to keep an eye out for wolves in order to make leather armor (unless you purchased / found them already.) and to gather ingredients in order to raise your alchemy.

    Your Teen Levels:

By this point, you should have access to Calm along with better stealth capabilities and a larger pool of poisons at your disposals.  Now it's time to have a bit of fun as you can learn to adapt to any situation thrown at you.  Your common approach to any encounter would be to first quickly scan and try to detect as many threats as possible.  Decide then if it's better to begin by causing chaos with frenzy or if backs are turned, maybe lighten their numbers by using stealth kills.  If you notice a threat that you might struggle to handle, it's also the best chance to fire a precise poison coated arrow with minimal chance of them dodging.

After your initial assessment, your next phase is to either continue stealth killing the remaining enemies or if you're detected / being searched for, you can begin a series of speed kills.  The idea behind this is to eliminate as many targets as possible before you are overwhelmed (or your ranged poisoned threat recovers).  I normally cast calm on a dangerous foe (paralyze poison if the roll fails) and try to kill the remaining threats with combinations of attack barrages, basic poisons and further control spells.

    Your Mid Game:

By this time, you should have a better amount of Magicka, a very good stealth capability and a better supply of poisons and potions to get jobs done.  It's at this point you will start to shine.  Much like in your Teen levels, you will always detect an area first, whether by manually looking and listening or a detection skill.  This time however, all your followup decisions will have a much higher success chance as your stealth kills will be more precise, you can paralyze multiple opponents simultaneously and you can even control the minds of several targets.  You can even force enemies to fight among each other or stand calmly by as you run past them and deliver the fatal blow to the dungeon boss.

    End Game:

At this point you should have maxed out majority of your major skill trees and are truly a force to be reckoned with.  You should no longer have fear of encounters and in all honestly, if you play your cards correctly, you should never even have an encounter as most enemies will be dead by stealth or combinations of illusion and poisons too.  Some of my favorite things to do at this point in the game is speed combat, since by this point you have honed your skills so much, you can do most situations on the fly.  Try to go into a cave / dungeon and just never couch, just constantly sprint or walk, silently killing threats from behind or quickly rolling to safety before they notice you.  Pop out and poison with a bow shot or just cause a mass brawl among them and pick them off as they fight.

    ROLEPLAY

Here in the Roleplay section I will present you a style of playing this build that will both challenge and entertain those seeking a true assassin character.  Though you are not forced to follow to the dot and may make changes, I will promise you that playing this to the dot will give you a whole different meaning of assassins and your ability to adapt to situations and your precision to kill on the fly and against overwhelming odds will be put to the test.  This will be considered challenge play so please keep that in mind if you find yourself constantly dying.  From here on out, no quarter will be taken, or given.

    Story:

Throughout history, whenever the King needed a threat removed, he would use one of his secretly trained operatives, Royal Assassins, to carry out the task. Though of noble blood, these men and women were never seen at any formal gatherings, nor even known to exist by anyone save for the King and a select few trainers. Thus, if they were ever to be captured, they would never be sent any help nor be saved from execution as their owners will deny any relations to them. In fact, it was more than likely that another Royal Assassin would be sent to 'tie loose ends'. Regardless, they were lethal and relied on precision and timing rather than brute force to carry out their tasks. Just the thought of one of them lurking around was enough to change the mindset of many of the prey. Some would run in fear, others are fighting amonst each other and then a few even remain overly calm in order to let their former allies get slaughtered in hopes their lives would be spared after.

You were one of these agents, sent to Skyrim from Cyrodiil in order to put an end to the war by assassinating the Stormcloak leader, Ulfrik and then to remove all Thalmor presence in the region once Skyrim was united under Imperial rule. However, since the Imperials in Skyrim were never informed of your mission, your assassination was cut short seconds before you killed Ulfrk as you were ambushed and captured instead. The Emperor would obviously send no help and will also no longer acknowledge any relations to you. You are now simply a loose end, tossed into a land of chaos and must now decide how you will continue on. Will you continue your mission to prove you don't fail? Will you desert your loyalty to the crown like he deserted you and seek revenge should the Emperor ever step foot in Skyrim? You are now free to mold your destiny as how you see fit.

    Suggestions and Restrictions:

    Suggested Mods:

Duel - This will help enemies react better to you and be more dangerous if you are caught.

Revenge of the Enemies - Enemies are overhauled, stronger and meaner with new abilities.

Balanced Magic - If using R.o.t.E. mod, take this to balance your illusion equally.

Climates of Tamriel - Make your surroundings realistic and dungeons darker.

Blood - (OPTIONAL) - when you're fighting tooth and nail with an enemy, with no more potions or magicka left and its just a fight to the death, this little mod will make it all the more memorable.

Improved Combat Sounds - (OPTIONAL) - just makes fighting a lot better sounding. Its icing on the cake just like the blood mod.

    Suggested Difficulty:

Adept - If you are using the mods mentioned above for the first time, or just new to assassins, go with this difficulty.

Legendary - If you are using console or no mods, and you are a seasoned assassin, you are better off challenging yourself with this.  If you are using the above mods AND selecting this difficulty, you better have a strong understanding of this game as you are clearly insane.

    Restrictions:

These are laws for this build. Do not break them under any circumstance unless you wish to ruin the experience or it's simply too difficult for you to handle. Remember, this game is only as challenging as you make it!

No Wait/Sleep abuse of stores/skills or Iron Dagger Smith - Basically don't use any exploits that make you overpowered quickly.  If the store doesn't have what you want, move on.

All preparations must be made in town, prior to a mission - When you decide to take on a quest or even multiple quests, prepare everything in town from poisons to potions to equipment. Once you reach your destination, there is no turning back. You will finish your mission or die, no doing half the dungeon then running off to town to resupply. Didn't expect a Troll to be there and wished you had a paralyze poison? Skeever bit you and now you have 20% reduced damage and no cure disease? Good! It's suppose to happen if you didn't prepare properly... now live with it and be resourceful.  Usually one or two bad experiences will forever change the way you play this build.

Ammunition limit of 10 on Arrows/Bolts (No Magic Bolts) - You are not here to snipe a camp dead from the safety of a rock. You are allowed to carry up to 10 ammunition in order to apply poisons or get someones attention. You MAY restock off dead enemies as long as they are carrying the same arrow/bolt type as you prepared in town and you may not carry more than 10 at any given time.

No invisible potions/spell - Lets face it, this is just broken and makes the game cloak & dagger.  You are permitted to use The Shadow Stone ability as it's restricted to 1 day cooldown but you may not abuse WAIT/SLEEP just to obtain it again.

No reloading a game - You will probably waste a bunch of items on a fight you could of handled differently if for example you started with a spell or you didn't get caught assassinating.  But that doesn't mean you should just reload the game and try again differently... you should learn from your mistakes.  Maybe you needed to be more patient or to use a different tactic.  The fun is learning from your mistakes and gradually becoming the best assassin... and refreshing a game doesn't help you, it just lets you take the easy route out.  The only time this is permitted is if you truly reach a dead end and cannot win a quest / objective but remember to count it as a 'surrender'.

No Followers - Followers tend to disrupt the whole sneaking aspect of the game, and sometimes even set off traps or give away your position when you don't need them to.  Even if you fix those problems, you tend to use them as a meat-shield or disruption while you do your thing.  I feel that it removes the fear of being caught and also takes away the use of strategies you can come up with on your own.  Worst of all, you know you're going to use that Lydia as your pack mule.  Just...don't.  Hang out with them in town then move on, you work better alone.

Leave a Signature Mark - Whenever you kill a boss or leader of a dungeon / quest, etc. You will leave your mark on them. It can be whatever you like; flowers, gems, a single coin as proof of a successful assassination. As a Royal Assassin, someone has to know it was you that made the kill and this is your way of saying it. I highly suggest using something commonly found as you're really not supposed to be changing it (unless deep down you honestly found something better than what you were currently using). Good starting marks are flowers you find from Helgen to Riverwood or a gold coin.

    End Notes:

This would be my first build on here, so please be gentle.  I tried to make it as complete as I can based on what I did when playing.  If you have any suggestions for improvements, feel free to share as well as any experiences you had.  I love to read if anyone found it too easy or struggled or experienced an 'oh crap!' situation.  Lastly, mostly a favor for me... if you do use this build, feel free to post here or even your profile how many 'surrenders' you had.  A Surrender would be reloading a game or deaths, though you can divide them as deaths are more allowed than reloads which are technically cheating.

05/03/2014 - I redid majority of the post based on feedback from those that responded.  I hope it's better in overall appearance and content.  Any further feedbacks for both content approval and other adjustments will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks! - Mike.

Not bad for a first build, although you seem to be running into the same annoying wall-o-text syndrome that I have. Try to condense the language and make it more visually presentable. Also, If you're trying to tag it as an assassin, set it up like this:

"Character Build Assassin" (include quotation marks as well)

Other than that, a solid first attempt, if a bit derivative.

I will try not to make my reply too lengthy. Firstly let me congradulate you for making a very unique build. I play like this myself, except I play as a knight style character or even a paladin. As to the rules if I run out of arrows (I count arrows for weight as I am a soldier and weight is everything when going out on an operation.) My point is when I run out of what I prepared for my quiver I can use enemy's ammunition to continue the mission. If it matches what I use. Example arrow type/bow type. Longbow/hunting bow = iron arrows. Imperial = steel. So on and so forth matching ammunition and bow type. Its saved a few lives with well placed shots from even an enemy weapon to save my life and that of my fellow soldiers. In a real fight life is measured in seconds. And I play with the dragons involved and sometimes I don't. I have console (need to breakdown and get a PC, but I have kids and money doesn't grow on trees lol. Eventually I will acquire one and try these mods I can't wait to get a hold of. Like I said up top I can appreciate this build in its entirety. Job well done. And well written.

It's a cool build you sure as hell have my +1. I particularly like the story aspect though I found the build as a whole to be quite a lengthy read. My suggestion is (I'm new here so I probably don't know any more than you) you could reduce the text on the recommended mod section as the links lead you to their respective pages anyway and they already have their own text-book sized guide of what it is and you could also cut down on the restrictions I feel 1 or 2 sentences would be more than enough to get your message across. But that's just my opinion I'm new here just like you!

Expand on the actual character a lot more mate. It's like 75% roleplay/background, 25% build. It should really be the other way around. Tell us why you've chosen the skills you have, what uses they have, and run us through a couple of combat encounters so we get the idea of how you play. Also, I'm slightly surprised by the use of three crafting skills. What assassin needs Enchanting or Smithing? Only Alchemy seems to suit to me, as an assassin would be well versed with poisons. Nobody really likes a three crafting skill build either, most prefer to stop at one, maximum two. Three makes the game really easy, and is a helluva grind to get to a high enough level. And finally, Perks!!! What is a build without perks? You really need those to show your build, otherwise it's more of an idea, not an actual character template. Also, maybe sqome more/better pictures? The first two are alright, the last is the most commonly used assassin/nightingale image I've ever seen.

I'm actually sitting down to start this now when finished I will let you know my thoughts of it. On thing though I'm going to skip the magic and enchanting. And add in one handed sword play/blocking with sword only if I get into trouble. Never pay a bounty that's the fear slash most wanted concept. And lastly the dragons are a must for the path I'm taking and lock pick/ pickpocket for financial resourcefulness. And cloth with leather bracers and leather boots. Blend into the crowd better that way. Once its complete I would like to post it with you as a joint push the boundaries of realism for the game if your interested in that.

Thanks! I'll work making it smaller.  I was arguing with myself when first writing and didn't want it to seem too bare.

The idea is great, as long as the ammo matches what you came in with, you can restock.  Well, honestly this is true, realistically you should be able to scavenge.  I'm just worried about bow abuse as people will just stay back and snipe targets rather than go with dagger/illusion.  I suppose no bow perks is penalty enough but I'll have to think more on it.  ATM I just restrict myself with 10 bolts in crossbow on my game.
