Mason played on console so he used basic silver swords, and perhaps an iron or imperial at the beginning, until he acquired his first set of silver, which I believe he got from the two silverhands guarding the entrance to Driftshade Refuge east of Dawnstar.

If you play on PC like me, you can use the basic silver sword, or you can use a mod which incorporates to ability to craft and/or improve them.  Mason stated several times that he thumbed his nose at the smithing tree.  He never perked smithing at all, but he did use it some.  I do not believe that he improved his weapons or his armor and relied entirely on enchanting.

The Sorceror's damage comes not from the weapon, other than the inherent +20 to undead on silver swords, but from the perks: enchanting and fire/frost/lightning enchanter in the Enchanting tree and Augmented fire/frost/lightning perks in the Destruction tree, plus Necromage in the Restoration tree (again against undead only).

Beware!  Mods like Better Magic take away the synergy between enchanting and the destruction tree.  So ensure that any magic mod you might use does not do the same.

I had no idea Better Magic removed Augmented synergy with enchanted weapons!  I'll have to figure out how to 'unfix' that when I play on PC again.

I'm 90% sure (since I haven't played an Enchanting character with it) that Mighty Magick doesn't mess with Destruction/Enchanting synergy.

My friend used that mod and said it was totally imba!  I liked what Better Magic did, but now that I've tasted Mason Gaming I'll never be able to play without my synergistic weapons.

Thank you for the reply I myself play on xbox I have Dragonborn and Dawnguard. I am a fairly inexperienced player. Had a play through with Masons seraphim absolute genius that one. Thank you again for posting the build

I am going to use the unlimited concentration casting on a completely different build!  The way it harmonizes with the rest of Seraphim is pretty awesome though.  Mason builds are just something else

If it worked better with wielding a sword, Sorcerer would be great with it.

Yep Librari, it does...I was quite unhappy and had to hold off on this build for that reason.     Better Magic is in my opinion the best magic mod for me.

    From the nexus page:

    • The Augmented Element perks now only add 15% damage per rank (down from 25%). To maintain their utility, they also add 15% resistance to that element with each rank.

While the changes to mastery perks were required for most spell schools, bonuses were stacking too high on Destruction. This helps to mitigate that for fairness while still making the augmented element perks very attractive options.

    • I've also stopped Augment Element perks from affecting weapon enchantments.

This was stupid. Combat doesn't need to be any stronger.

    • Cloak spells had their base range dropped to 8 feet (from 10), but they now grow in both size and damage with mastery and augmented element perks.

I wanted to make these more useful, so they can now get pretty huge. Base range was dropped to match base damage so that they can correctly list their range/damage in description as it changes.

I remember looking at Balanced Magic when I was playing on PC.  I wonder if it would work better with Sorcerer?  Lots of the changes wouldn't affect it really (other than the cap on cost reduction), but I'm pondering the possibility of a clothed Sorc alternative.  The Alteration spells are much better with that mod, it sounds like!

I just read over Balanced Magic, Think I will give that one a try on a different play through, and I was thinking the same thing, A clothy Sorceror!

His build The Nemesis is basically a clothed sorcerer, maybe try that one.
