Cross play not happening due to Sony 'not being helpful'

So it looks like 'cross play' (the ability of Fallout 76 players to mingle with those on the other platforms) probably won't be coming to Fallout 76

And the blame, according to Todd Howard, lies firmly at the door of Sony.

Not the for the first time, Sony is being highly protective of the integrity and independence of its gaming platform. You will remember that Sony initially put the blocks on modding with Fallout 4. Following being called out by Bethesda and the furore of the fans, Sony eventually and somewhat reluctantly partially changed their stance - allowing mods, albeit without allowing the upload of any additional resources or scripts.

This time around Sony appears to have killed off the opportunity for PS4 players to freely mingle with those on XBoxOne and PC.

That's a real shame for us here on the Vault, as it doesn't appear that we will be able to (eventually) host a private server where ALL of our members can play together. Whether Sony eventually changes its mind about this remains to be seen of course

Yeah, which is weird, as Crossplay IS allowed with Fortnite

Man, I was just ranting about this last night. It seems like Sony just can't help but shoot themselves in the foot time and again with Bethesda. I dont know if it comes from a fear of data sharing required from Bethesda to make it work, or what the deal is with Sony leadership. I have to hope (just like modding) that eventually this decision will be reversed. I'm guessing that Todd Howard is hoping that by turning up the heat with some negative publicity that might happen. I don't see how Sony thinks they can keep customers with these sorts of restrictions they keep trying to put in place.

Although I won't be buying 76, this just confirms my decision that if I ever buy a console again, it will be an Xbox. Not only do I generally prefer Microsoft, one of my favorite companies, but I think Xbox's style and design is way prettier, and I love my Xbox controller that I use for my computer/TV set-up. Most importantly, Bethesda and Microsoft have an almost "exclusive" relationship, from the looks of it. I think with Skyrim, they even released DLCs first on Xbox, no?

I swapped out my PS4 for an XBoxOne a few months back - best decision I ever made, with the mods on Fallout 4 and Skyrim there really is no reason to go with Sony again.

I mean, PS4 DOES get some good exclusives

By the way, poll suggestion (a pretty simple one, I know...): in which platform will you be playing Fallout 76? Hopefully there will be cross play between the Xbox and PC, and allow the Vault members to integrate better.

Yeah, but that's about it. While I loved The Last of Us, and would like to play the new Spider-Man game, I don't think that the exclusives warrant a buy.  I'm not interested on that many Sony-exclusive games, and am pretty happy with how my PC is able to satisfy my gaming interests that are not that broad and pretty stable. I'm still playing New Vegas, and started a new Oblivion playthrough after all these years, heh. The only reason to buy a console would be if upgrading my computer became too expensive on the long-term (I have no perspective on when I'll be able to upgrade, and it'll be a long process: a new, larger cabinet, motherboard, source, CPU, more RAM and maybe an SDD or new hard drive. By the time I'll be done with it, Starfield will probably be out and will require me to retire my GTX 970! Not to mention Cyberpunk 2077...Ugh!).

Eh, to be honest I consider the PS4 vastly surperior to the Xbox One unless you play...well at this point honestly just Bethesda games. For me Bloodborne, Last of Us, Last of Us 2, Horizen: Zero Dawn, Until Dawn, God of War, potentially my desire to play Shadow of the Collossus, all are just better than any Xbox exclusive I've seen even hinted at recently. Then there's the little stuff, I prefer the controller of the PS4, it has so many good features with the best (for someone who would normally be sharing with two younger brothers) being the fact that it doesn't take batteries or charger packs or any of that nonsense. The built in battery or whatever for the PS4 controller is amazing...

Really, yeah the selling point is always going to be those Sony Exclusives, but I prefer the console as well. JJust about everything with it is just better for me personally, but yeah a major part is probably that I play so many different games that the exclusives seal the deal...Oh and my PC is shit...that too. To be fair, a huge part of that is that the Xbox One was terrible on release, the few people who I know that bought it (including yours truly...well the family at least) all ended up trading it in within the first year because it just...urgh it was pretty shit and I still hold that against the console.

BUUUUUUUUUUUUT Anyway. I honestly wasn't surprised at the news, it's really just Sony being Sony and it's something they do across multiple games. I doubt we're going to see this change, mainly because Sony's stance on mods still hasn't changed from the...limited selection that we're allowed, and I can't see them doding much to reverse it. But if as Chris points out, Fortnite is available for crossplay...I have to wonder whether part of it might be Bethesda's fault, it's still definitely mostly Sony's fault, but I wonder if Bethesda's close relationship with Microsoft hass Sony being a bit petty about stuff.

I'm with Deebs here. The PS4 is vastly superior to Xbox. I'm going with Sony any time because of it's exclusives. I don't really like Halo and Gears of War is good for me but not enough to buy an Xbox. Besides, this is probably because Beth is to close with Microsoft as Deebs said.

Unless it has changed since I last heard, that's not entirely true. They are allowing crossplatform play only with PC, no intermingling with other consoles allowed. I don't really get it, it seems counterproductive. I think Bethesda should do the same thing as Fortnite. Make every other consoles playerbase bigger so that Sony's is less attractive. I like PS4 and think their exclusives are way better and all that, but this whole "PS4 or bust" online mentality feels pretty petty and bs to me.
