Pokemon Sets

You know  I've been thinking about starting something like this for ages, and I suppose there's no time like the present to give it a bit of a kick up the ass. Now, I'm a huge fan of Pokemon, especially the semi-competitive metagame lately so I spend a fair amount of time creating various teams and sets. They usually aren't particularly great, but they either do some pretty interesting things or work out much better than expected. Usually I make these on Pokemon Showdown because I'm far too lazy to actually "Catch 'em all" with the right stats, abilities and natures so that really makes it easy.

So if you have any interesting, or successful Pokemon Sets that you use, share them here. If you enjoy using a particular Pokemon and have a sweet moveset, well drop that in even if it isn't the most powerful version out there. I'll give a bit of an example with one of my favourite Pokemon to use lately.

    Assault Serperior:

This Serperioir is simply a beast, it combines the naturally high defenses of a Serperior with the massive damage output that can be achieved by combining Leaf Storm and Contrary. It can take a surprising amount of damage even from boosted, super effective Special Attacks and then deal pretty decent damage right back at opponents. It works extremely well when an opponent has hazards up, or lacks a powerful fire or flying physical attacker.

The Assault Vest is the key item, giving it a pretty hefty boost to the already good 95 Special Defense, the base 75 Health is a decent enough number and will be left alone. We're still going to focus on Speed, bringing it up with the full 252 and choosing a nature that boosts it, but we'll combine that with Special Defense and the good Special Attack to create a powerful, defensive hard hitter

As for the moves, it rolls with Leaf Storm to get the awesome Special Attack boost when paired with Contrary, HP Fire (To deal with Scizor/Ferrothorn), Dragon Pulse to deal with any annoying Dragon Types that are pretty common in OU and Dragon Tail to knock enemies around and deal continuous damage whenever hazards are set up.

    Item: Assault Vest
    Ability: Contrary
    EVs: 4 SpA / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
    Nature: Timid
    - Leaf Storm
    - Hidden Power [Fire]
    - Dragon Tail
    - Dragon Pulse

    Toxic Scrafty:

    Item: Leftovers

    Ability: Intimidate

    EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def

    Nature: Impish

    - Toxic

    - Bulk Up

    - Drain Punch

    - Dragon Tail

This is another interesting one, but one that works in just about any team and works very differently than any other Pokemon trying to fulfill the role of a staller. But so many Pokemon are bulky and can learn Toxic, so what makes Scrafty the only choice? Well it’s the combined benefit of having access to the attacks Drain Punch and Bulk Up when combined with Intimidate, the three of them create the ultimate defensive Pokemon that can set up on any physical attacker and then heal itself with combined Drain Punch and Leftovers.

Dragon Tail and Toxic, let’s discuss them. Toxic is the perfect move for dealing with opposing walls, and Dragon Tail completely stops anything that tries to set-up and when combined with hazards can really start raining havoc on some powerful Flying Types.

Overall this set isn't the most powerful, it's very easy to counter and nowhere near as strong as other Scafty sets, but it can be a bit of a surprise and is incredibly good at bulking out opposing Physical Attackers.

Glad to know Capricorn, always good to share some sets or teams regardless of how competitive they are :D

I have to admit, most of mine are kind of silly single Pokemon gimmicks so I'm interested in seeing a full team.

    Trick Slowbro

    Item: Iron Ball

    Ability: Regenerator

    EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

    Nature: Bold

    - Trick

    - Slack Off

    - Toxic

    - Psyshock

This is a bit of an odd set that relies on Slowbro’s lackluster speed to surprise enemies. Slack Off and Toxic are fairly common Slowbro moves, and can be used rather successfully to stall enemies, crippling entire portions of their teams, Psyshock works as a fairly decent STAB attack that gives him something to use against threats like Chansey that can pretty much ignore anything else Slowbro can do. It also works against some pretty decent Taunters

Now the gimmick here is with the Iron Ball, honestly a Slowbro isn't going to outspeed much, and nobody will really be surprised at moving first so they'd never predict it, that is until you've tricked it onto an opponent with Leftovers (or really any useful item) and that Pokemon now has to rely on it's speed being halved. Not to mention it completely cripples most Flying/Levitate Pokemon which are now susceptible to Spikes, Toxic Spikes and Ground moves without changing their type (in other words, they can still take the full force of Stealth Rock), not to mention the fact that most of them rely on speed. It really is an occasionally useful combination

    Physically Defensive Amoongus:

    Item: Rocky Helmet

    Ability: Effect Spore

    EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA

    Nature: Bold

    - Synthesis

    - Protect

    - Spore/Toxic

    - Giga Drain/Sludge Bomb

A semi-interesting defensive Pokemon that breaks away from the traditional set. This Amoongus breaks all the rules of being an Amoongus. It doesn’t pack Regenerator (which I can only assume is the largest shock of the set) and it also forgoes the Black Sludge, but the Rocky Helmet isn’t that uncommon either.

Now the focus of this set, is stalling out against any Physical Attacker that prefers Contact moves. With them it deals a large amount of damage through Rocky Helmet, and also has a 30% chance of inflicting it with a debilitating status effect. Synthesis and Protect pretty much allow unlimited free healing and support as long as you can take that hit, and Spore or Toxic can be good in a pinch (personally I prefer Spore, but both are excellent choices) or when an opponent relies on moves like Earthquake, Stone Edge or Gunk Shot to deal high physical damage to you.

This set is surprisingly good, I've been using it in OU before they made Amoongus OU recently (I like to think I was part of the reason they did, but I doubt it so much) and it completely shocks people, I remember once when I managed to get a 1v1 happening against a physical attacker with a Choice Band and managed to get off the Paralysis. Not only could he not finish me off, but I was moving first, healing up with Synthesis and he kept taking damage that wouldn't do all that much. Pretty damn fun way to end a battle :D

A personal favorite of mine (SHEER FORCE DARMANITAN: ITEM-Choice Band ABILITY-Sheer Force EVs-252 Atk/4 SpD/252 Spe NATURE-Brave/Adamant MOVES-Flare Blitz, SuperPower, Earthquake, Flame Charge) One of the strongest UU physical attackers since it's debut several years ago, and still has plenty of utility to remain viable in today's metagame

That's a pretty cool set, I've never really been a fan of Darmanitan (faster and bulkier Fire Physical Attacker in UU) but he is a shit tonne stronger, especially with Sheer Force. I might have to give this a shot though, I suppose it's all about the right set.

I'd probably ditch Superpower to be honest, see if I can't work in either a special move (for those Pokemon that are killer defensive walls) or U-Turn to get that east fade-away if your under pressure. But that's more me hating Superpower than anything else, it's probably a good pick for dealing with bulkier normal types
