Oblivion Artifacts Guide part 1

    Artifacts Guide

The time has come and here is another Guide, this time for the Artifacts of Oblivion. There are some pretty unique items spread throughout the game, in terms of appearance, enchantments and/or lore and we´ll go throught the most significant ones. I´ll be describing their enchantments, how you can obtain them and how useful they are (from my point of view). I won´t be adding stories to them, because this is primarily a guide and right now it contains 48 unique Artifacts. It will be a long read for sure and if I were to add descriptions from lore, it would be even longer. Also note that the magnitude and the damage of the weapons I´ll be describing are the highest ones - for those who don´t know, unique items are level-based. What does this mean, then? This means that at lower levels, these items will be weaker.

So, I guess we can take look at the first few artifacts, the most famous ones.

    Daedric Artifacts

These are the most unique, famous and badass items in the game. Every single one of these artifacts has to be obtained by completing the quest of the corresponding daedric prince. What I won’t be telling you is how to complete the quests, but I will describe the locations of the shrines (plus my input on how useful these items are).

    Ebony Blade

Is a one-handed blade (katana) that can be obtained through Mephala´s quest.

Requirements: Level 15, then you must offer Mephala a Nightshade between midnight and dawn.

    Mephala´s Shrine

Ebony Blade has an enchantment of Absorb Health 8pts and Silence 10s, with a base Damage of 23 and 45 Charges. It is a very versatile and powerful weapon, shining against mages with it´s Silence effect, while Absorb Health will definitely keep you alive while your foes will be drained of their life essence.

    Mace of Molag Bal

Famous one-handed mace with one of the most cool looks in the game. Obtained through Molag Bal´s Daedric quest.

Requirements: Level 17 and you have to offer a Lion Pelt to Molag Bal.

    Molag Bal´s Shrine

The mace has a base damage of 25 and 44 Charges, with an enchantment of Absorb Magicka 5pts and Absorb Strength 5pts for 0s. Note that the Absorb Strength really has a duration of 0 seconds, which means that it absorbs absolutely nothing. The Unofficial Oblivion Patch fixes that. This weapon can be useful for a mage character, especially when you run out of Magicka. This weapon can replenish your magicka pool pretty quickly - plus, if the Absorb Strength works as it should, it will increase your melee damage.

    Goldbrand

One-handed Katana obtained by completing Boethiah´s Daedric Quest.

Requirements: Level 20, and you have to offer a daedra heart to Boethiah.

    Boethia´s Shrine

Goldbrand has a base damage of 25 and 76 charges! It´s enchantment is 22 Fire Damage. This katana is the second strongest weapon in terms of raw damage, surpassed only by Umbra. But it´s enchantment gives it more damage per strike than Umbra, so if it’s charged, you have the strongest weapon in the game.

    Volendrung

Gigantic two-handed hammer obtainable through Malacath´s Daedric Quest

Requirements: Level 10 and you have to offer Troll fat to Malacath.

    Malacath´s Shrine

So this massive hammer has a base damage of 20 and it has an enchantment of Drain Health 5pts for 20 seconds and Paralyze for 3 seconds. Note that it´s Drain Health, not Absorb Health, so you will just be damaging the health of your enemies. This enchantment combined with Paralyze is really one of the most powerful in the game, but the downside is that Volendrung has only 16 Charges. Sustaining this weapon´s full potential would need a lot of Soul Gems, but the sheer power of this brutish weapon is worth it!

    Spellbreaker

Shield given to the player after completing Peryite´s Daedric Quest

    Requirements: Level 10.

    Peryite´s Shrine

Spellbreaker is a heavy armor shield with an Armor Rating of 17 and 30% Spell Reflection. That is one of the highest Spell Reflection magnitudes you can get on item, so combining it with one or two other powerful items with the same enchantment can easily get you to 100% Spell Reflection.

    Masque of Clavicus Vile

Heavy helmet given to you if you choose to return Umbra to Clavicus Vile in his Daedric Quest.

    Requirements: Level 20.

    Clavicus Vile´s Shrine

This helmet has an Armor Rating of 7.5 and a Fortify Personality enchantment of 20pts. To be honest, I never found this item more useful than Umbra (which is pretty much the most powerful and badass weapon in the game), but I guess it can have it´s uses in certain dialogues where you have to gain the trust of some NPCs. But that´s all I guess. Except if you want to play a baddass samurai character. This helmet goes really well with Orcish Armor.

    Umbra

One-handed sword obtained through Clavicus Vile´s Daedric Quest if you refuse to return the sword. While Umbra technically isn´t a Daedric Artifact, it is tied to a Daedric quest.

It´s base damage is the highest of any weapon in the game (28) and it has an enchantment of Soul Trap for 120 seconds, with 125 Charges. It is also the most badass sword in the game, with a cool backstory and lore, but I guess it only fits characters that walk on the dark side of the magicka or whatever. But combining it with Azura’s Star will keep your enchanted weaponry charged all the time. Also note that while it´s base damage is the highest, it actually does not surpass the damage of Goldbrand or Chillrend because of their damaging enchantments.

    Wabbajack

Staff given to you by our favourite Prince of Madness (Or Haskill if you have completed Shivering Isles) after completing Sheogorath´s Daedric Quest.

Requirements: Level 2 and you have to offer Lettuce, a Lesser Soul Gem and Yarn to Sheogorath.

    Sheogorath´s Shrine

The Wabbajack is a staff enchanted with special Wabbajack Effect. This effect transforms any creature into either a Daedroth, a Deer, a Goblin Skirmisher, an Ogre, a Rat, a Sheep, a Skeleton Champion or a Troll. This effect has some interesting uses. You have to note, however, that if you transform any creature, it will be hostile to everyone and everyone will be hostile to it, because it is “wild” now. Wabbajacking a creature will transform it with full health everytime, and if that creature doesn’t die in 10 seconds, it will reverse back to it´s original form with full health again. Also, when you Wabbajack a creature who has conjured something, it´s summoned creatures will disappear. An important thing to note is that the Wabbajack has only 4 Charges.

    Savior´s Hide

Light Cuirass obtained by completing Hircine´s Daedric Quest.

Requirement: Level 17 and you have to offer a Wolf Pelt or a Bear Pelt to Hircine.

    Hircine´s Shrine

This cuirass has an Armor Rating of 12 and an enchantment of Resist Magic 25%. I have to say that the Savior´s Hide is my favourite armor for hunter or barbarian characters, as it looks really cool. Although the Resist Magic enchantment isn´t very versatile, it is worth the trouble if you´re up against mages.

    Ring of Khajiiti

Piece of jewelry given to the player by Meridia after completing her Daedric Quest.

Requirement: Level 10 and you have to offer Bonemeal, Ectoplasm or Mort Flesh to Meridia.

    Meridia´s Shrine

The Ring of Khajiiti grants it´s wearer an enchantment of 25% Chameleon and Fortify Speed 10pts. 25% Chameleon is a huge boost to Sneak, so if you ever go into someone´s house to steal or if you´re about to enter a dangerous looking dungeon, don´t forget to put this ring on. I myself prefer using this from time to time, but wearing it all the time? Nah, I just don´t like being like Predator all the time.

    Skeleton Key

Lockpick obtained after completing Nocturnal´s Daedric Quest.

    Requirements: Level 10.

    Nocturnal´s Shrine

Skeleton Key is an unbreakable lockpick and my favourite artifact by far. Probably the most powerful if you ask me. I mean, it gives +40 to your Lockpick skill and it can´t break like any other lockpick! Characters with a lower Lockpick skill will profit from this more than characters with higher skill. Also note that if your skill is 60 or higher and you obtain the Skeleton Key after that, game will treat you like if you had 100 skill so you won’t be able to raise your skill any higher. Also, if I remember correctly, after you give the Skeleton Key to Martin for Daedra´s Blood quest, the +40 Lockpicking bonus might remain.

    Ring of Namira

Piece of jewelry given as reward for fulfilling task given to you by Namira.

Requirements: Level 5, Personality below 20!

    Namira´s Shrine

This ring gives it´s wearer 12% Reflect Damage and 10% Reflect Spell, so it is a versatile thing against every enemy you encounter, covering both spellcasters and warriors.

    Skull of Corruption

Staff obtained through Vaermina´s Daedric Quest.

Requirements: Level 5 and you have to offer a Black Soul Gem to Vaermina.

    Vaermina´s Shrine

Skull of Corruption has a unique effect that is called Corruption and basically, what it does is it creates clones or duplicates of any NPC who is hit by the staff. The clone will last for 30 seconds and his equipment and stats will be identical to the original. Also, the duplicate will immediately attack the original, which can give you a feeling of a manipulator (which is cool). Also, it doesn´t work on anyone considered to be a “Guard”.

    Azura´s Star

Soul Gem given to the player after completing Daedric Quest for Azura.

Requirements: Level 2 and you have to offer Glow Dust to Azura.

    Azura´s Shrine

Azura´s Star is pretty much a reusable Soul Gem. Everytime you enchant or recharge some enchanted item, it will empty the Star, but it won´t destroy it. You can fill it as many times as you want, but remember that it can´t hold Black Souls (Souls of NPCs).

    Sanquine Rose

Staff obtained by completing Sanguine´s Daedric Quest.

Requirements: Level 8 and you have to offer Cyrodiilic Brandy to Sanguine.

    Sanguine´s Shrine

A Staff with a unique effect which summons random Daedra everytime it hits a target. You actually have to hit someone to summon the Daedra which lasts for 20 seconds. It has 10 Charges.

    Oghma Infinium

Tome given to the player by Hermaeus Mora for completing his Daedric Quest.

Requirements: Level 20, and you have to have completed every Daedric Quest for other Daedric Princes. You must also have started Blood of the Daedra.

    Hermaeus Mora´s Shrine

The reason why I left this little bad boy to the end is that it can be obtained only once you complete all quests for other Daedric Princes. And what does it do? It gives you option to raise 2 Attributes by 10 and 3 Skills by 10. It is best to use this when you raise your two main Attributes to 100, because the Dbook will increase these over 100.

    Quest Artifacts

So, now that we have done with Daedric Artifacts, let´s take a look on another category, and that is Quest Artifacts. By this I don´t mean unique items you will obtain by completing certain questlines or quest, but items, that are quest locked. Which means, that if you complete the quest, you won´t be able to get your hands again on these items.

    Ayleid Crown of Lindai

Retextured Elven Helmet which is tied to the Collector quest, where you have to obtain Ayleid Statues for Umbacano. After you collect enough of them, you will be tasked with finding the Ayleid Crown of Nenalata, but during that quest, you´ll find out that it is possible to bring Umbacano another helmet and he won´t be able to tell the difference. So, the Ayleid Crown of Lindai is a Light helmet with an Armor Rating of 0. Yes, zero! But it´s enchantment is quite good. Fortify Alteration 15pts, Fortify Illusion 15pts and Resist Magic 30%.

    Ayleid Crown of Nenalata

Well, now let´s take a look at this helmet which Umbacano really wants. It has Fortify Alteration 15pts, Fortify Conjuration 15pts and Reflect Spell 25%, as well as an Armor Rating of 0. So, at the end of the quest, you have to give one of these helmets to Umbacano and live with the consequences. But what is important is that once you give one of the helmets to him, it will get destroyed. So choose the one that suits you the most. You want to lower the damage from spells or return more damage from spells that hit you? That is the question.

    Bloodworm Helm

Light helmet obtained during the Mage´s Guild questline, and to complete that quest, you have to give this item to the Archmage, after which it will be forever lost to you.

So, this helmet has an Armor Rating of 4.5 and an enchantment of Fortify Conjuration 12pts. What it also does is that when you wear this helmet, you are able to cast the “Essence Drain” spell, which Absorbs Fatigue 40pts for 10s, Health 15pts for 10s and Magicka 15pts for 10s on Touch. Due to some bug, only the Helm obtained at levels 1-4 gives you this spell, but with lower magnitudes because it is a levelled spell. So, there is not much use for this item. However, those who play on PC and have the Unofficial Oblivion Patch can rejoice! This Patch fixes the spell and also places the helmet on the desk in the Archmage Querters when you return it to the Archmage, so it can be taken!

    Necromancer´s Amulet

Amulet that is part of the same quest as the Bloodworm Helm and has to be given to Archmage too, after which you cannot regain this amulet. As stated above, the Unofficial Oblivion Patch fixes that.

It has an enchantment of Drain Strength 25pts, Drain Endurance 25pts, Fortify Willpower 14pts, Fortify Intelligence 14pts, Fortify Conjuration and Fortify Magicka 130pts. A pretty powerful enchantment, with the downside of reducing your melee damage and Health pool, but I can imagine some mages or warlocks would like to make this deal for more Magicka and power.

    Hrormir's Icestaff

Is an item tied to the Thieves´ Guild questline, but after you finish the quest, the staff can be stolen.

It has a particulary strange enchantment of Frost Damage 10pts in 30ft, Light 30ft for 30s and Chameleon 1% for 30s on Target. That Chameleon effect can make fights little harder, because the camouflage effect makes hard to notice what exactly are your enemies doing. But notice that the Frost Damage is an AoE effect which means you don´t have to directly hit your enemy. If you manage not to hit anyone, the Chameleon effect will not occur.

    Staff of Everscamp

Daedric staff associated with Sheogorath, and can be obtained druing the quest Whom Gods Annoy in Leyawiin.

What this staff does is pretty interesting, because it is not an effect which you must manually cast. Just by having this in your inventory, four Scamps will be summoned and your Speed will be drained by 20pts.

Those four Scamps will last forever until you complete the quest. If one of them is killed, it will shortly reappear. But you have to note, that these Scamps will not fight any enemy you encounter, they will just get in the way. A workaround is casting a Command Creature spell (Duration of 1 second will suffice) on the scamps, and then they will engage any enemy until the fight is over. Also, while they will not attack anyone, they are quite useful because they crowd near you, effectively blocking ranged attacks.

    Draconian Madstone

Amulet obtained during the Lifting the Vale quest starting in Bruma. After completing the quest, the amulet will be displayed in the case in Bruma Castle, allowing it to be stolen.

It´s enchantment is Resist Poison 50% and Resist Disease 50%. I myself don´t find this enchantment very useful. As far as I know, poisons are mostly used by Goblins so it can prove useful against them and most wild animals transfer Diseases to you, so it is a little useful, but it is not an item I would choose to wear all the time instead of other, more powerful ones.

    Unique Weapons

    Artifacts Guide

The time has come and here is another Guide, this time for the Artifacts of Oblivion. There are some pretty unique items spread throughout the game, in terms of appearance, enchantments and/or lore and we´ll go throught the most significant ones.

I think you have made a boo boo mate isn't The Ebony blade from Mephala's shrine? not Boethia's just a thought mate. I also thought you would have included the fact that people wont take getting struck with the Ebony blade as an attack, so really useful for some of the more stealthy DB quests.

I see I have linked Boethia's Shrine for Ebony Blade. Crap. Thanks for pointing it out.

This guide is very well presented and well told. I real like it and can definitely tell. You did a smash up job of it. I never have played Oblivion before but after reading this yesterday on my phone, I look forward on getting it as well as have an Artifact "Me like, I want list" Like in Skyrim soon to be two years ago.

Out of all I've read on this site so far, this, I must say is the best. Again, Great Job!

I look forward on reading more from you.
