Image result for elder scrolls dawnguard

Their last game which was a total success was Skyrim, 9 years ago.

Their last few games have been failures in one sense or another. Elder Scrolls Online had a terrible launch, but it eventually found its footing a year later. It seems to be going strong, at least. However, ESO wasn't even developed by Bethesda Studios, but Zenimax, so even though it is the better than anything else Bethesda Studios made, you can't even say that Bethesda made it. Then you have Fallout 4, which was considered a big step down from the previous Fallout games despite getting decent reviews and making lots of money. Over time, people's opinion of it soured. Last, but least, comes Fallout 76.  It had a disasturous launch, gaining little money, but many negative reviews. It is still seen as a complete joke of a game.

Bethesda hasn't put out a high quality product in 9 years. Fallout 76 was probably the worst game they have ever made. ESO is more polished now than Skyrim ever was. The internet has all but completely turned against Bethesda at this point, pointing out that Bethesda have always made buggy games even if they were good.

Instead of making another ELder Scrolls game (the only franchise they have had consitent success with recently), they are making Starfield. We'll see how that turns out.

Bethesda Studios is the publisher, and it's very much alive. Doom Eternal is a huge success.

Bethesda Games Studios is the developer, and it has the money from Bethesda Studio/Zenimax behind it, plus the big name, both brand-wise and person-wise (Todd Howard). It isn't dead by any means, though there is more pressure for them to release a Skyrim-level game after FO4 e F76. Even then, people still liked FO4 for some reason, and it did well financially.

So their only real failure was FO76... Companies have had a worse track record to come back from. Not only that, but now that they have proper competition in the form of Microsoft-backed Obsidian Entertainment and to a lesser extent CD Projekt Red (CDPR makes kind-of-different games), they have to do better. Competition is always good, and coupled with time, you've got the beauty of the free market: get good, or else.

Was FO76 an actual flop though? Or to phrase it another way, how much money did they lose over FO76?

Yes these past years Betty has been flushing their goodwill down the toilet. Yes it would be nice to live in a world where game devs are like rockstar-auteurs like CDPR or Kojima but as long as they keep making money, they'll be fine.

Sheogorath holds in his realm giggling loons, flamboyant auteurs, and craven mutilators. "

Well we all know where auteurs end up.
