What cliches do you try to avoid when writing your back stories? What over done story elements grind your gears whenever you come across them?

The old 'kill everyone who looks like the guys who killed my parents and left me an orphan' plot comes to mind.

Being the best assassin that ever lived.

I don't like when people mention the game events. I prefer to have a backstory for the character and develop him like I see fit throughout the game. I hate when I see something like "the events of Helgen changed him and he now spends his life hunting bandits and protecting the innocent"

Said best assassin ever getting captured by border control.

Who the heck wants to be the worst assassin that has ever lived? Although that might be a fun idea for a play through. lol

The problem with being the best from the get go is where do you go from there?

Eh that's worse than being the worst. Who wants to be the world's most mediocre assassin? I lied, that could be a fun play through as well. An assassin who hates his job so he just goes around half ass assassinating people. To lazy to care if he is caught or seen, collects his paycheck, and then goes home to catch crap from is wife and kids.

I felt that zachs aspiring mage hit that idea perfectly.

A fighter who just goes around and gets beat up because he can't fight...lol Is constantly running from bandits, getting knocked out, and being carried back to the last place they've been.

That can't be good for a dragonborn's street cred.

I'm the opposite . I'd much rather the role play at least try to fit around the events at the beginning of the game. At least tell me why you're tied up and about to be executed.

...He/she was a poor farmer until ??? killed his/her livestock and suddenly decided that he/she would become the most badass of badasses.  Oh, and now he/she wants revenge on ??? group for slaughtering his/her farm animals.

    OR

...He/she is a lone wolf (or vampire), the last of his/her kind that stalks the chickens of the hamlets of Skyrim stealing their souls and shouting some hot breath on those that would protect the Rooster overlord!

Same. It's a little jarring when you have 'the sneakiest of sneaks' getting caught in an imperial ambush, or the greatest hunter in Tamriel who has to drink potions when fighting wolves at the start of the game.

Don't underestimate the Rooster Overlord.  I, for one, sleep better at night knowing someone has him on the run.
