U.O.T.W. Chapter 309 Regrets and Retribution

  •

The moment Sotek stepped inside, he made his way to the steps then practically collapsed upon them. He leaned against them, resting his head on a step, using it as a pillow and closed his eyes as his body gave up the fight to stay awake. Within moments he was asleep, as he was too exhausted to even try to prevent it.

Kul-et watched him walk through the door to Jorrvaskr then spoke to the group as a whole.
“What the hell just happened? I was so sure I was alone, I really was. Yet he’s sitting on top, and I’ve now got to train with him. Oh Sithis… I wish I didn’t shout at him”.

Tilma walked past her then started to make her way inside. She stopped with her hand on the door then turned to Kul-et.
“I don’t think he’s on top. I happen to think he’s in a really low place at the moment”. Then she pushed the door open and walked inside.

Aela looked at Kodlak, she tried to think of something to say just to break the uneasy silence that hung heavily over the training area, but all she could think of was one word.
    “Harbinger?”

He shrugged his shoulders, but it was obvious to everyone his heart weighed heavily on his mind.
“I don’t know Aela. He keeps his plans to himself, that is his biggest fault. Out on the plains, when he sees a deer, he works out what Scarface is going to eat, what Sotek’s going to eat. Then, after that, what he’s going to make with the fur and even then, he considers the potions he could make with the antlers. And all that goes through his mind before he even kills it. All we see is a deer. All Red see’s is food and a chase. Half the time I wonder if Red really needs the kill or is she just enjoying the hunt. Sotek feels Ebony let him down. But more so than that, he’s exhausted. It would have helped if he was more upfront. Then again, if he was upfront would his plan have worked? Then there’s the last question”.

Aela walked over to the Harbinger and sat on a chair. All the while her eyes fixed on the doors.
    “And what’s that?”

Before the Harbinger answered he carefully looked around at each of the Companions and Whelps.
“Does he have to be upfront in order to earn our trust, or should we just have the courage to trust him? That’s a question you all will have to answer yourselves”. Then the Harbinger headed inside the hall. He saw Sotek asleep on the steps and took a fur from a pile at the side of the hall and gently covered the sleeping Argonian with it.

Tilma spoke softly as she watched the Harbinger from a side table.
“What has he done to get in that state?”

“I wish I knew. He’s pushed himself far harder than what he did with Kul-et, that’s for sure”. He then made his way to the front doors. “I’ll be back soon”.

    “Where are you going?”

The Harbinger paused, then spoke quietly so he wouldn’t disturb Sotek.
    “The temple”.

Outside in the training area, Kul-et looked across the sky. It was still a good few hours before midnight and the two moons were still climbing the night sky.
    “He said this’ll happen…”

Aela looked over to her with a puzzled face.
    “Who said what would happen?”

“Sotek, who else. He said I’d regret shouting at him before the moons begin descending. Aela, what the hell am I going to do?”

Aela sighed then started walking inside with the others.
“Easy, turn up for training, shut up and listen to what he says. I’ll come out with you, and Veezara will. We’ll give you some emotional support. I just hope he don’t use his shouts, they hurt”.

Ebony sat on the step by the tables, she looked out across the mountain range as she slumped down.
“What the hell do I do? I screwed up more than Kul-et”.

Aela snapped at her as she felt frustrated herself, due to Sotek playing her with his familiar.
“How the hell should I know”.

Eorlund smacked Aela on the back of her head, then gave her a stern talking to.
“The pair of them, like it or not, look up to you. Buck up and take leadership. Stand up to the bloody mark instead of behind it”.

Aela flinched the moment he hit her.
“Damn it, what the hell”. She glared at him, then at Kul-et and Ebony. “What? I don’t know, do some simple tasks for him”. Then she went off around Jorrvaskr and headed to the Inn.

Kul-et stared at the coins and gems laying out on the ground, then she crouched down and started picking them up. Veezara walked over to her and knelt down besides her. She looked up at him as she slowly placed the coins in a bag then she fell in his arms and started quietly mumbling. “You going to be here tomorrow?”

He held her in his arms and gently swayed her side to side.
“Yes, don’t you worry. He can’t be any worse than Aela”.

Farkas laughed as he walked past them both.
“Don’t you believe it. Aela hurts, but he’s bloody lethal”.

Ebony sat there watching them, she felt alone. Farkas hadn’t looked at her and even if he did. She knew he couldn’t come to her and give her any support. She was alone, and now afraid. She thought back about Sotek, in some ways he scared her more than Aela. She knew Aela had a temper, but he had intelligence, and he knew how to use it. All she could do was wait until he decided to have his retribution.

Within half hour the Harbinger came back to the hall to see everyone inside at the table. Except Sotek who was still asleep and Aela who he presumed to be downstairs. He approached Sotek and gently shook him by the shoulder.
    “Wake up”.

Sotek stirred then blinked a few times. The moment his eyes focused on Kodlak, he pulled himself to his feet then faced him directly.
    “Harbinger?”

He just signalled to Sotek with his finger, beckoning him to follow.
    “Come with me lad”.

He led Sotek outside and down the steps towards the temple where the Priestess was waiting for him. The Harbinger slightly bowed down to the priestess then spoke softly to her.
“I leave him in your capable hands”. He then gently held Sotek’s arm as he softly whispered. “Good luck”. Without a further word, he left Sotek there at the temple door and headed back to Jorrvaskr.

Sotek watched the Harbinger walk up the stairway, then he turned to Danica and mumbled.
“I always wondered what an orphan felt like. Now I know”.

She laughed slightly then gently took him by the hand and led him inside.
“Oh, you’re no orphan. At this present time, you’re my student”.

Sotek cast her a confused look, but he went with her all the same.
“Ok, what is it I’m supposed to learn?”

“Healing my dear boy. Healing”. As they walked inside she directed Sotek to a stone slab bed. “You sit there, close your mouth and open your ears. This will probably take half the night and pay attention. There’s only half the night left”. She said with a yawn as she tried to cover her mouth.

Sotek couldn’t help but stand up and answer her back.
“But I know healing, you yourself said I’m an expert at restoration. Was it not you that said my healing spells are worthy of your temple?”

To prove the point, he cast a big healing spell twice in a row, almost effortlessly. Then he cast his grand healing spell and a golden light flooded the temple. Bright light burst through the windows like a small sun had gone nova from inside it’s very walls. Everyone outside in the streets of Whiterun saw the glow as it lit up the city for a few seconds, then it died down and disappeared.

The priestess blinked a few times as she recovered from the glare of his spells, but then she shook her head.
“This is going to take all night. I’m not talking about healing the body, I’m going to teach you how to heal the soul. You can heal your body, but your spirit, that’s a different matter altogether. But, it is from the same school. So, shut up and sit down, and stop casting blinking spells before you blind me”. Sotek sat down on the slab as she directed. But this time he had a keen interest in what Danica wanted to teach him.

Veezara, Kul-et and Ebony entered the hall shortly after Sotek and the Harbinger headed off to the temple. Ebony sat at the table and just buried her head in her arms. Kul-et however looked around for Kodlak.
    “Where’s the Harbinger?”

Farkas moved over to Ebony and rested his hand on her arm.
    “Hey, you ok?”

She just shook her head, then she looked around for the Harbinger as well.
“Where is he, and where’s Sotek?”

Tilma called out to them all, in a quite dismissive tone.
“They’re at the temple. What are you going to do to sort this out?”

Ebony shrugged her shoulders then buried her head once more. Kul-et however looked straight across the room and stared at Tilma.
“According to Aela, I’m going to shut up, listen and pray that he doesn’t shout at me”.

    Eorlund laughed at her.
“Yea? Well good luck with that. You’ll need more than simply burying your head and coming up with ‘shut up and pray’”.

Ebony lifted her head up from the table then groaned.
    “So, what would you suggest?”

Eorlund thought for a few moments then spoke to the other Companions.
“Vilkas, when Sotek hurt Aela. What was it she said to him? That laps lop thing?”

Farkas cast a strange look at him as he tried to remember.
    “Laps lop?”

    Vilkas however started laughing.
“No, you idiot. Not you Eorlund, Farkas here. Lapsa Luna. Yes, use Lapsa Luna! That’ll do it”.

Moments later, the Harbinger entered the hall. Immediately after he sat down, Ebony, in an unprecedented move, got up and sat next to him.
    “Harbinger, where’s Sotek?”

“He’s at the temple. He’ll be there for most of the night”.

    “Is he ok?”

The Harbinger looked at her with his big owlish eyes.
“Not exactly ok, but he’s alright”.

Ebony looked over to Vilkas, then at Farkas, who just gave her a slight nod, as he tried to edge her on.
“Harbinger, what exactly is Lapsa Luna?”

At that precise moment, Kodlak was taking a swig of mead. He suddenly coughed and spluttered as she had caught him by complete surprise.
    “I beg your pardon?”

“Lapsa Luna? Did I say it right? Vilkas said that Aela used it when Sotek hurt her”.

Kodlak’s eyes went wide from the shock as he thought that was long finished with.
“It’s a right in which the Companions can use to repay spilt blood”.

Ebony’s voice was weak, but she stuck with it and asked her next question.
“Can... Can that help with our situation?”

Kodlak’s face changed from surprise to curious. He would happily bet that Sotek never thought it would get mentioned again.
    “Ermm… In what way?”

“I never delivered that message. So, in a way, I caused Sotek to get mentally hurt. Could that settle the bad blood between us? I don’t know what else to do”. Ebony asked. She hoped it would, at least that way she could try to sort out the situation.

“Ermm, maybe... But he has to evoke the right”. A quick thought danced in Kodlak’s mind. ‘How the hell should I know, he made it up, not me’ .

Ebony stared at the table for a few moments until the Harbinger sighed then nodded.
“Just tell him under ‘Lapsa Luna’ you feel that you’ve done him wrong. He’ll honour it and give you a task. But whatever task it is, you must perform it”.

Ebony nodded back then gave Farkas a slight smile.
“Yes, I’ll do whatever he asks”.

Kul-et sheepishly turned to the Harbinger.
“That’s all very well but what the hell can I do?”

Kodlak sat there for a while as he thought about Kul-et’s situation, but finally he just shrugged his shoulders.
“I suppose the best thing you can do is turn up tomorrow and train. Then see what happens. I just hope he don’t use his shouts”.

Kul-et looked around desperately at the others.
“Why does everyone keep saying that?”

Ebony lightly thudded her forehead into the table then wrapped her arms around the top of her head.
“I wish I remembered that stupid message, that would have been easier”.

The Harbinger smirked at the comment then called out to Ebony.
“Go tell Aela to come up here, and ermm… Don’t forget to give her the message”.

Kul-et gave Ebony a quick shrug, then she turned to Kodlak.
“Harbinger, she’s not downstairs. She went towards the market”.

The Harbingers face turned an off white as he faced the double doors.
“Oh dear, she’s gone to the inn. That’s never good. Farkas, Vilkas, bring her back here, right away”.

    Instantly, Farkas grumbled.
“Really? She’s a right pain when she’s drunk. She knows her own way back, honest. Besides, she’ll pick a fight with the guards and we can collect her from the cells tomorrow. That’s best, isn’t it?”

The Harbinger simply pointed to the door.
“What’s best is if you two never let her go there to start with. Shift yourselves”.

After nearly half an hour of training, the priestess was more than satisfied with Sotek’s progress, not to mention exceptionally happy with his control and ability.
“I honestly thought that would take far longer. Just how do you find it so easy?”

Sotek stopped his spell casting then sat on the stone bed. He was pleased with himself as well, but he tried not to sound like he was gloating.
“It’s the Dragon in me, he’s the driving force of my learning. At least that’s what the Greybeard said… That’s funny, I can’t remember his name. It’s been so long since I’ve been there”.

The priestess nodded like she really understood.
“Yes, you’re the Dragonborn. Can I ask you something?”

Sotek sat up straight as he watched her with a puzzled expression.
    “Yes, what is it?”

“Well, you got this ability, this gift. And then you’re a werewolf as well. I’ve watched you, young man, you and Aela. There are times when your soul and this… Werewolf spirit… Thing… There are times when they co-exist perfectly. Yet at other times, you seem to struggle with them”.

Sotek found himself staring at the stone floor. He slowly nodded then looked up at the priestess.
“No, there’s times when it’s near impossible. It’s like my very souls pulling at it. Whatever it is at the time”.

She eyed him cautiously as she progressed with her questions.
    “Like Kul-et’s sword?”

Sotek got up the moved around the temple, examining the flowers in their different vases. All the while he noticed the priestess stayed where she was, but her eyes followed him everywhere.
“Kul-et’s sword, yes. That, Hircine’s ring, the Saviours hide”.

Danica slowly nodded and glanced at the temple doors. In her mind she could see Aela sitting in the hall on a chair by a small table.
“You have no issues with her wearing Hircine’s ring though, do you?”

“She is merely looking after it. It’s there when I want it”. He paused and glanced in the direction Danica was looking and scratched his head. “Funny, I never thought about how it feels to let her have it. It’s just something I did. Odd that I was so anti with Kul-et and her sword”.

“This ‘power thing’ is it?” She said almost accusingly. She rapidly changed her tone and sat down on one of the stone beds then motioned for Sotek to join her. “Kodlak feels that one day you’ll be the Harbinger. You have certainly climbed through the ranks there. Even the other Companions see you as the Harbinger’s successor”.

Sotek nodded again, but the priestess noticed his head moved slowly, like something weighed heavily on his mind.
    “You don’t want it?”

He looked at her right in the eyes, as he answered, she couldn’t help but feel a slight chill. It was almost like his breath sucked the warmth out of the very temple.
“Yes, yes I want it. The power, the control. Dominance of the, the lot of them. At least ‘he’ does. Not Scarface, he just wants to roam with his mate. It’s ‘him’. ‘He’ wants it”.

“There it is, and here’s my question. If you’re ready for it that is?”

Sotek sat back on the bed then nodded, he smiled slightly at her, but he just sat and listened.
“You expect them, all of them to blindly follow you. No questions asked and no explanations. Kodlak do this, Farkas do that, Aela bark like a dog, but you keep the reasons to yourself. They have to wait until your workings bears fruit. Why is that?”

Sotek shrugged his shoulders but then he started chuckling.
“I prefer Aela howling than barking...” The priestess shook her head disdainfully at him, so he quickly apologised. “Sorry... I don’t know, control? Maybe? I don’t know”.

“You know it’s not fair, it’s not right. It’s not fair to any of them, and it’s not fair to Aela. She needs you far more than she does with the others. You’ve opened her world up so much. Before you came here, no one knew she was a werewolf. She hunted in the dark, in shadows. Basically, living a half-life of existence. But now she’s free, because of you”.

“Has she, or they for that matter, done anything that was so bad, to warrant your lack of trust in them? What possible betrayal have they committed to warrant such silence? Must they be kept in the dark for so long? Just what did they do, to warrant such treatment?”

Sotek closed his eyes and sat still for a few seconds then whispered out his answer.
“Nothing, they haven’t done anything to deserve that. I don’t know why I do it, I really don’t, but your right. However, with Kul-et I couldn’t say anything, else she would have known. There’s times when I keep them in the dark to protect them”.

    “Protect them from what?”

“Me. To protect them from me”. Sotek said with an unsettling, wide-eyed stare. It made Danica shiver and for a second she regretted having this talk alone.

Tutting at herself for such foolish thoughts, the priestess smiled then rested her hand on his shoulder.
“I thought that’s what that tiny piece of armour scrap was for? To protect them?”

“Yes, in some ways”. Sotek mused over her words and shrugged his shoulders at her. “It’s a circle of rocks if you will. A barrier keeping the dark side of me out”.

She sat in silence for a few minutes then got up and walked over to him.
“You have no dark side Sotek. A mischievous and cunning one yes, but dark? No… Don’t be so foolish. The Harbinger said that you had a strong urge to take the sword from Kul-et, is that so?”

“Yes, I really struggled with that”. Sotek said as he almost grasped her words with his hands. He wished he could hold them in his palms. They gave him comfort. A feeling he hadn’t felt since the whole Meridia episode began.

“I would like you to do something. Tell me, where is that armour scrap now?”

“In Aela’s room, last night I slept with her”.

Danica groaned and covered her eyes as if she was trying to blind herself from the image of both Aela and Sotek in the Huntress’s bed.
“Please, I’m a priestess, not a saint. There’s only so much sin I can deal with at a time. Here’s what I would like you to do. It’s an experiment, and it might help us all to understand what’s going on with you”.

They both spent a good half hour or so talking about her idea until Sotek was convinced enough to give it a go. It just so happened that at that precise time there was a loud knock on the temple doors. The priestess turned towards the door, bemused over the owner of the knuckles which had knocked at such a late hour.
“Now what?” She said as she walked towards the entrance.

She opened the door to see Aela promptly fall inside the doorway as she was carelessly leaning on the door itself. She fell on the floor with a loud bang, but then looked up at the priestess.
“Watsh you doings up theresh? I thinks I’m drunk… And on the floor”.

Within a second, she burst out laughing and ended up on her back. She looked straight up and saw Sotek leaning over her. She looked at him with a big silly grin on her face as she recognised him.
“Hey, it’s you, my friend! By Hircine, I need a friend now”.

As she looked up at him, her daft, silly grin slowly spread across her face once more.
“I can’t get up”. She started laughing once more but then, rather unexpectedly, due to the emotions but more so due to her heavy drinking, she suddenly burst into tears.

Sotek cast a weary glance over to the priestess and shrugged.
“I’d better take her home”. Then he knelt down and picked Aela up in his arms.

Aela slumped her head into his chest as she felt his arms wrap around her and she whispered through her tears.
“I miss my friend. Where is he?”

Sotek gently kissed her forehead then whispered back to her.
    “He’s here, he always was”.

The priestess gently rested her hand on Sotek’s arm, as she led him to one of the stone beds.
“You’d better lay her on the slab over here. I’ve got to see the Harbinger anyway, so maybe you both can talk here. If she’s able to that is”. She then sighed slightly and headed to the door.

As Sotek tried to lay Aela on the slab, she wriggled and slipped from his arms. She landed on the stone bed with a great thump, which caused her to holler out in a mixture of pain and laughter as she felt the impact on her haunches.
“My backside, oh bloody hell that hurts. I hurt my arse. That’s gonna bruise in the morning”. She then started laughing again as she sat up.

Aela looked over to Sotek, who was standing just beside her, then she stopped laughing. She took his hand and guided him to the slab. Once he was sitting next to her, she gave him a weak smile. The pair of them sat in silence for a good few minutes until Aela broke the quiet aura of the temple by bursting out laughing.
“Sorry, I’m sorry, it’s inappropriate. I need to ask you something”

Sotek felt his eyes start to roll, but he controlled the urge. He spoke quietly back to her, which wasn’t necessary, but their surroundings made the quiet whispering compelling.
    “What?”

“Can we talk? What I mean is, I don’t want to talk to my mate, no shield brother, sister. We’ve been friends for ages, I need to talk to my friend”. She reached over to him and held his hand then looked at him in the eyes. “I need to talk to Sotek, my friend”.

Sotek quietly nodded then softly retracted his hand. He moved away from her side by a few feet which made Aela’s face slightly screw up as she watched him set a small boundary between them.
    “Ok, as friends”.

Aela sat there silently and just stared at her feet. Sotek studied her expressions and could see she was trying to think of something to say, or the very least she had something to say but she just couldn’t find the words. She felt a tear form and run down her cheek, then she wiped it off with her finger. She glared at the teardrop as it rested on her finger tip and almost snarled at it. She wiped the offending tear off on her leg as her face hardened.
“You’re not exactly easy to follow you know. It’s like the Harbinger said, I see a deer and I see food. But you, you see a deer and you’re sitting by the campfire with a potion and a pair of shoes”.

Sotek’s face blanked off as he tried to work out what she had meant. “Pardon? That don’t make sense”. He said as he chuckled at her words.

Aela’s face screwed up once more as she glared at him.
“Well of course it makes bloody sense! It’s simple, it means… Ermm... Well it made sense when the Harbinger said it. We’ll ask him about it tonight. The point I’m trying to make is… Oh, hell I don’t bloody know”. She slumped back against a stone pillar and angrily folded her arms across her chest in defeat. Her eyes quickly shut as the temple felt like it was starting to spin. All Aela could do was lean towards Sotek and hold on as the temple span faster and faster.

Once her head calmed down a bit, Sotek took her hand.
“There’s something the priestess has asked me to do, I’m not sure about it. Will you be there with me when I try it?”

“Of course I will. Ermm… Try what?”

“Gain full control of the dragon I suppose. The priestess said there’s a wolf and a dragon inside me. They both want to be Alpha, the dragon has to learn his place”.

“I’ll help if I can”. Aela replied as she mused over the situation. All she could think on was the simple solution. Bite the dragons tail off.

He leaned over her and kissed her temple.
“You just being there will be enough”.

Meanwhile, Danica Pure-Spring walked over to Jorrvaskr then entered the hall without knocking. Upon her entering, the Harbinger got up and offered her a chair.
“Here, rest your feet. I wasn’t expecting you back for a good few hours. What’s happened?”

She looked at him sternly as she answered his question.
“What happened? Well, where to start? First off, you lied”.

Kodlak looked horrified for a second until the priestess started laughing. “Oh, your face. What I meant to say was that you said he was keen to learn. But, you certainly didn’t tell me how fast he learned. His mind’s like a sponge. His focusing was precise and he understood perfectly what I was asking. I’ve never seen someone learn a technique like that so fast. It only took half an hour”.

Ebony lifted her head up and called out to the priestess.
    “He learned what?”

“A new spell, oh sorry, a new technique. His healing spells can restore his stamina as well as heal him. So, while he can cast a healing spell. He’ll never get tired, not physically at any rate”.

“You mean he could run forever?” Ebony asked in her usual childish, inquisitive manner.

“Bar the need for sleep and eating, yes. I expect he could or as close as someone would ever achieve, bar his magicka reserves. He was in a bit of a state. What happened to him?”

Kul-et slowly stuck her hand up.
    “I did, I messed up. I didn’t understand”.

“Ahh, he told me he got shouted at, but that’s not what ailed him. What did he do to tire himself out like that?” Danica asked once more as she looked around the hall for answers.

    Kodlak shrugged his shoulders.
“We don’t know yet, but once Farkas and Vilkas fetch Aela from the Inn, I’ll get Sotek and bring him back here. With some luck we’ll find out”.

“But Aela’s at the temple”. The priestess replied, catching Kodlak off guard.

At that moment, Sotek and Aela had already left the temple and were heading back to Jorrvaskr when they saw Farkas and Vilkas walking back up the steps from the market place.
“Hey Aela, the Harbingers not happy that you went to the Bannered Mare. You’re not drunk, are you?”

“Just a bit”. Aela stated as she shrugged her shoulders in a ‘so what if I am’ attitude. “I never got into any fights, so there. Why? As Aela led them all to the hall, both Vilkas and Farkas noticed that Sotek stayed a few feet back away from her. They both guessed that Sotek and Aela had unfinished business.
