Those Moments That Mattered

  • "Mom, let's go to the inn, I'm hungry. Besides, there are no more customers for totday. Look, everyone's heading home." Carlotta crouched in order to face her daughter, and tenderly combed her hair with her hands. "You've done a good job today, my dear. You know, with the money we've made today, i can Cook something Nice for us, how about that?" "Sweet roll as dessert?" "Sweet roll as dessert, love. Why don't you play outside for a while, then i can prepare dinner, okay?" "Okay, mom." While her mother was closing the stand for today, Mila left for the wind district, house Battle-Born to be precise. She waited in front of the door, and was forced to hear Heimskr shouting about Talos. She slowly shook her head. When she turned around, it was Braith who looked her in the eyes, a mean look on her face. "So, Valentia, how was the catch today? Any spare money in your pocket?" Mila felt too weak to resist, as always. She cursed herself in her head, for not having the guts too teach this monster. Her hands were already moving to her pocket. "Good girl, that's how i like to see it, Valentia, saves you a couple of bruises on your pretty face." "Stop it!" A familiar voice did Braith turn around, only to face a furious Lars Battle-Born. The look on his face, an inexorable, restrained anger, was a typical Battle-Born one, but even Mila was amazed by this action. "Ah, the youngest pupil of the great Clan Battle-Born! Trying to save his girlfriend! I tell you this, those fists.... Aaaah!" Mila felt a strange sort of satisfaction, while she was fanatically pulling Braith's hair. Her screaming was the most beautiful sound she had ever heard. Lars was not in such an euphoria. "I think she understands the message, Mila! Now let go!" But Mila didn't hear him. There was only a haze of rage, and Braith's lament as background sound. But then she suddenly laid on the ground, Lars between her and Braith. "You are in big trouble, girl. Guards, guards!" Lars and Mila caught eacht other's gaze, and they knew what to do. The climb to the top procedeed without any problems, and it was not long before Lars and Mila were sitting on the edge of the roof of Dragonsreach, content with their victory. "Get down here!" It seemed like the whole city guard had turned up to assist in the impossible mission to get the two kids on solid ground again - only Mila and Lars knew how to climb the Palace of Whiterun. "Who had thought that this roof would surve another purpose than a finding place for Bird's eggs?" Lars asked to nobody in particular. "It's a shame there are no eggs around to throw at those guards down there!" Mila laughed. They both fell silent, but it was fine. It was those moments that mattered. In a society that tore itself apart, with rumours of dragons being spread across the land, and a civil war ready to explode, nothing was more important than to have the whole world spread out in front of you, and to have the feeling that you stood above all of this. And while the guards were trying to climb the walls, and Carlotta looked up all worried, Mila and Lars laughed, because that seemed appropiate.
