Caylin's Monsters
Chapter 6: The Brood
As I entered the cave, I immediately knew something was off. We were told a group of bandits was in here, but I wasn’t so sure. For one thing, the smell was atrocious. It smelled like rotting meat. Surely no human beings could stand living in a place like this. I thought maybe I had come to the wrong cave; maybe this cave had been abandoned and left to the animals.
Then I heard something. It sounded like a woman speaking. As I inched forward into the cave, I saw who the voice belonged to.
She spotted me at the same time, and it was obvious that this was no ordinary woman. I could see it in her eyes, and when she bared her fangs, there was no longer any doubt. I had never seen a vampire before, but I had heard about them. Fear rose up in me. Why did I want to come here alone? Could I really face this creature by myself?
Thankfully, she wasn’t as well trained as I feared. She rushed at me, but not with her weapon. She came at me with bared teeth. She was quick, and she barely caught my arm as I dodged to the side. Her defenses were very poor, though, and she fell quickly to my blade.
I was relieved at first, but then I heard more voices. I looked around and saw a doorway at the top of a set of stairs. As I listened, my heart began to race…
From the sound of it, there were at least five or six voices coming from the chamber within. I began to panic. If there were five or six more vampires, how could I possibly hope to survive a confrontation? I remembered Farkas’ advice, “Just stay sharp, keep your shield up, and everything will be fine.” So I took a deep breath and started to come up with a plan.
I shot an arrow into the chamber to get the vampires’ attention. As they rushed toward me, the hallway leading to the main chamber created a choke point. This gave me the slight advantage of being able to fight them one at a time. My plan seemed to be working until the last couple of vampires. I was forced back into the main chamber, but they fell to my blade in the end.
The adrenaline was pumping through me as I looked around at what I had done. I could hardly believe that I had bested seven opponents on my own. I had a mix of emotions. I felt a sense of pride in myself, but I also felt a twinge of guilt. For some reason, though, the guilt was far less than what I had felt the previous day with the bandits.
I decided to check the inner chamber just to make sure there was no one else hiding in there. What I saw, however, turned my stomach, and I thought I would be sick.
There was blood everywhere, and I was pretty sure there was a human heart sitting on the table. What kind of horrible monsters were these? As I looked around the room, any guilt I felt vanished instantly. A lump formed in my throat as I thought about the people who were murdered by these creatures.
As I made to exit the cave, I paused for a moment to reflect. I decided that these were not human beings. These were beasts. They may have been intelligent beasts, but they needed to be put down all the same. I wouldn’t feel guilty for slaying creatures like that ever again.
