Radioactive - Chapter 1: Paint it Green

  •

A new day dawned as the morning sun showered Diamond City with it's light when it finaly got over the Wall. The green stadium wall was separating the citizens of Diamond City from the dangers of the Commonwealth. The people of DC were already at the centre market and eating at the Noodle stand. In one corner of DC was the location of DC Security.

Jack jumped from his bed at the moment he felt ice cold water cover his skin. He fell on the floor, trying to calm down after a shocking wake up call. He looked at his fellow guards. They were laughing.

"Fuck you!" said Jack as he stood up.

His friends were still laughing. "What?" one of them said. "You would've been late if we didn't wake you up."

"You could've just shook me a little. Not try and drown me." said Jack as he went towards his locker.

"Where's the fun in that?" asked one of the guards.

"I know that you're trying to have some fun, Myers. I understand that. But you need to take this job seriously. You are the first and last line of defense for these people. Have fun when you're on your brake." said Jack as he dried himself with his towel.

"Aren't you a mood killer." said Myers and went to the mess hall. He took his daily meal ration and sat at the table next to a guard with DC written in white letters on his pauldrons.

"I can't believe we're getting Salisbury Steak for the whole day again." said the guard and threw the steak back into his plate.

"Better then nothing, Connor." said Myers. He took a bite from his steak. He chewed once and froze. He then spat the chunk out. "Guess you're right."

    "Noodle stand?" asked Connor.

"Noodle stand." said Myers and smiled. The Noodle stand was the best place to eat in DC and everyone knew that. Competition was almost nonexistent to the japanese speaking robot that ran the place.

Connor and Myers sat down in front of the robot and ordered their meal. The noodles were the best meal in the wasteland around Boston, and Myers smile as he ate them only confirmed that. After finishing their meal, the two of them sat down on the nearby bench and waited for the noodles to settle down in their stomach.

"You know what we're doing today?" asked Connor after a few minutes.

"All I know is that we need to help Abbot about something to do with the Wall." eyplained Myers.

"To be honest, I hate patroling that thing." said Connor.

"The thing that keeps us safe and allows us to survive?" asked Myers.

"Yeah." responded Connor, not noticing Myers sarcasm. "You're either outside, risking getting shot, or inside, dying of boredom."

"You can always train to become a Runner." said Myers. Runners were the best that DC had to offer. They trained more then the guards and were actually rarely seen in the city itself. They were always outside, scavenging or hunting, doing whatever it takes to keep DC alive.

"No thanks. I just bought a new house near the stands. Don't want to abandon it." said Connor.

    "Suit yourself." smiled Myers.

They stayed at the bench for another hour, talking about life in DC and exploring the Commonwealth. They both wanted and adventure, but because of their job as guards, they couldn't have left.

It was noon when they went to Abbot. The old man was painting the Wall.

    "Hey, Abbot!" Connor called him.

Abbot turned around. "I was wondering when you'd two show up. I need your help."

"What do you need from us." asked Myers.

"I started painting the Wall this morning and noticed that our supply of green paint was extremely low. I need you to go to Hardware Town and get some more paint." explained Abbot.

    "So, paint retriveal?" asked Connor.

"I can tell someone else, if you're not up for it." said Abbot.

"We're up for it, old man." said Myers.

Myers and Connor went back to the barracks and took their gear. Automatic pipe rifle and ammo, three Can grenades and Myers took his Bootlecap Mine. Outside the barracks, they saw Jack talking with a man in metal armor and a heavily modified assault rifle on his back.

"Hey Jack. We're ready to go to Hardware Town." said Connor.

"First, let me introduce you to Axel." said Jack. "He's a Runner, and he'll be joining us to Hardware Town."

"A Runner?" asked Myers. "I thought you guys we're out of the city."

"I came back this morning." said Axel. "Heard you had almost no paint, so I decided to help."

"Glad you're coming with us." said Connor and shook his hand.

"Alright. Let's move out. I want this done by six." said Jack.

They passed the gates and made their way west. The walk was calm and there were no interuptions. They got to Hardware Town and prepared to go inside.

"Alright, listen up." said Jack. "This area is known for high concetration of raider gangs, and Hardware Town has been occupied a couple of times already. I expect the same today. Keep calm and check any movement."

"I'll swing to the back. There's a basement entrance there. I could use it to flank them." said Axel.

Jack nodded and Axel left. "Myers, take point. Connor, watch our six."

They entered the building and slowly surveyed the first room. There was nothing, not even radroaches.

"The paint will be at the storage area in the back." said Jack and they moved. When they got to the storage, they were surprised to see it empty of raiders.

    "This is weird." said Myers.

    Connor responded. "Yeah. No resistance."

At that moment, a rifle round was fired and it went straight through Jack and hit the wall behind him. Jack fell to the floor, screaming in pain.

"Ambush!" yelled Conor as he and Myers dived for cover. Several raiders were firing their weapons at them. Myers pulled Jack behind some crates.

"Where did it hit you!?" he asked.

"Here! Just below the lung!" said Jack.

"That means you'll live." said Connor and returned fire, taking down one of the raiders.

"Connor!" said Myers. "On my signal, throw a grenade!"

"One. Two. Three!" said Myers and they threw a grenade each. The raiders were cut down by the shrapnel. At that moment, Axel breached the doors on the other side and mowed down the remainging raiders.

    "Room clear!" he yelled.

"Come over here." said Myers. "Jack's been hit."

Axel ran over and took out bandages. "I'll give him a stimpack, but with this wound, it won't work for long. We need to get him to a doctor."

"I'll go get the paint." said Connor.

In a few minutes, they managed to get Jack back on his feet and moving towards DC. It took longer to get back, but Jack made it to the doctor in time.

"Is he gonna be okay?" asked Axel.

"He'll be fine." said the doctor. "Altough it will take a couple of days before he can get back to patroling the Wall."

Myers and Axel went out of the clinic when they were called by Connor. "Guys! I think you better check this out." he said.

He gave them a letter. ""I found it near the paint." he said.

Axel and Myers read the letter. "This can't be real." said Myers. "It says there's gonna be a massive attack on DC."

This was a good start, and I can't wait for the future chapters to see how each character airs out and progresses.

This is going to be good. Nice first chapter! Hopefully we'll get fuller descriptions of each character as the story progresses, unless the scant information is entirely intentional (how often do we really look at the DC guards? Not often, in my case. Ver...  more

Glad you liked the first chapter! :) While I will describe each character, I will mostly let the pictures do that job, as they will show each new character and major events.

Something terrible must have happened when I find myself reading Fallout blogs :D I need a doctor like Jack there. Joking aside, I enjoyed this.

Glad you liked it, Phil. :)
The first few chapters will focus on representing the characters and their skills, both in and out of combat.
