Chapter 2: The First Priest
Entry 9.

It was just supposed to be another dragon extermination. Ever since the first dragon outside of Whiterun, I’ve completed a handful of similar bounties and while it is true that I was fighting beasts of legend, beyond that none of them had been much different from the last.

I’m reminded of one of the first lessons from my early days with the Companions of yore. Overconfidence will get you killed. It had been drummed into the heads of all of us and those who failed to heed it would often fail to return from a job. As had almost been the case for me with this extermination.

I had come to Dawnstar at the behest of the Circle, who had heard that the Jarl was in need of a dragon slayer. It turned out that the dragon in question was roosting in the mountains near the Pale’s border with Whiterun. From there it was attacking the shipments of food and other supplies that the hold relied upon to survive, and so the Jarl wanted it to be gone.

It did not take much to track the beast as wherever it had been it left destruction in its wake. Eventually its trail lead to a mountain overlooking a camp of giants. While I was confident in my ability to kill a single dragon, I was unsure about facing that same dragon alongside a group of very angry giants. With that in mind I made my way up the mountain’s far side.

Not long after I started the climb, I spotted the dragon perched atop one of the walls I have christened Word Walls. Unfortunately, the dragon spotted me as well.

I would have liked to fight the beast on level ground, but as that was not an option, I instead used the surrounding trees for cover and my bow to bring the dragon to the ground. Amongst the trees, it was unable to move as freely as in the sky and so it was easy enough to pick it off from a distance.

With that done, I decided to investigate the Word Wall and see what I could learn. As I approached I noticed a sarcophagus lying out in the open next to the wall. When I was only a few feet from the wall, the sarcophagus’ lid burst open, revealing an undead mage that was far more powerful than any draugr I had previously encountered.

Our battle seemed to last for hours and many were the times that I thought my quest was over. However, with the release of one of my few remaining arrows the mountain grew quiet.

Once I was sure it was truly dead, I moved closer for a better look. All that was left was a pile of ash atop which sat a mask made from a mixture of metal and leather. It was only then that I realised what I had just faced. A Dragon Priest, and a high ranking one at that. I had heard tales of men who worshiped the dragons and the mask the most powerful of which were granted.

The thought that not only are the dragons returning, but also their most faithful followers, send shivers down my spine. I have no idea why it is all happening, but my being the Dragonborn will probably mean that I’ll be in the middle of it all.

A-Pocky-Hah! Ah Krosis. I actually fought him by staggering him with a Turn Undead spell and get in-his-face with my spear.
It was also the first time I fought tactically.
